    Dead Head?

As Charles says, you have to be careful of pumping diesel into the engine that sits in the piston crowns. A 300tdi WILL bend its con rods on the starter, even if the engine doesn't start. It rather sounds as if your timing is out, though removing and replacing a 300tdi head does not alter the...

    TD5 Viscous Fan problem

There is a bearing behind the fan - it is most likely that. It's a bit of a menace to change though. At least LR actually sell the bearing (although we don't buy from them) unlike the 300tdi where you have to change the timing case.

    oil pump screw problem?

We had one unlucky guy who had the bolt fall off, and then on his new engine a tooth broke on the sprocket and the chain fell off. Luckily by this time he had an audible alarm on his oil pressure and switched the engine off before it was damaged. To add insult to injury, LR only sell both...

    Rave Cd

Here is a link to a topic in the Landyonline forum. It contains links to Bestsharing.com RAVE stuff that I have uploaded. You can download it for free. If there's anything else you want I most likely have it and can put it there for you. Land Rover Forum in Africa • View topic -...

    front prop broke at 70mph

The gearbox end of the front prop is the first one to go. If you fit a lift you should grease the UJ about every 100 miles or so.

is the new LR engine a ford cost cutter

Hey Abe, get your facts right. The Italian VM 2.4/2.5 turbo diesel was only fitted to the RR. The early turbo diesel in the Defender was the TD 'Falcon' 2.5 LR engine, pretty crap really, possibly the worst LR engine ever. But I agree with everything else you say. ps my Defender has a...

    oh my god thats petrol

So if a TD5 has no fuel pump, how come I spend my life changing them? Am I suffering from mechanic delusions?

    Blown Head Gasket ???

If you have the black expansion tank they are notorious for breaking along the horizontal seam. The replacement white ones are better. I have a stainless steel larger tank fitted. Maybe you should fit a 'little black box' which will warn you before you overheat your motor.

    How Reliable is a defender???

Well I have a Defender 95 and it has been perfectly reliable. Mind you I do look after it quite well. I will happily set off to do 2k kms without thinking about it. But on the other hand you should see the parts I take with me, including an alternator, UJ's, a water pump, a vacuum pump...

    squeaking clutch

I fail to see why a new cambelt can cause your clutch to squeak? Maybe if you change your coolant it will fix the problem. Or put some washing up liquid in the washer bottle. Or fit seat covers or a roof rack.

    oil grade specification

I must say I think Slob is completely wrong. Oil is cheaper than engines. I change my 300tdi oil at 6k kilo intervals which is about 3k miles or so. But we had until recently high sulphur content fuel which is the reason for that. A mate of mine didn't change the oil on his Fraud econobox...

    Wheel Nuts!

I agree completely with CharlesY for we have heard of many Land Rovers where they have had a flat in the bush and the fancy socket thingy breaks. This can be a bit embarassing when 500ks from the nearest LR stealer. We don't have to worry about the wheels being stolen here - they take the...

    Another leak...must be a Landy!

The LR clamped joints go after a while. Better to take the whole shebang of both pipes to a decent hydraulic place and get the pipes made up with better pipe and fittings. We do this often, it also costs 1/3 of the LR Stealer price and they never ever fail again. Our local place offers a...

    axle oil

Guy in a shop this very morning tried to sell me GL4 EP90, lucky I checked. The GL5 version (AGIP) was a bit more expensive. Not that there is much difference, but it is to put in client's cars, and some will moan if we use GL4.

    Squeaky, Squealing Brakes.....

Google on 'squealing brakes' and you will find lots of solutions... But the same solution doesn't work all the time, and some people have changed everything in sight and the squeal remains. It's a bit like Black Magic, maybe you could try a bell, book and candle. :)

    Rave Cd

Mine came with a directory on it called 'crack'. In the directory is info on how to install the crack dll. Then the microcat won't need a dongle. If you don't have the crack I can e-mail it to you.

    clutch estimate?

If your m/c goes phut, the pedal will go to the floor and stay there. The springs have an 'over centre' action to help push the pedal down. Makes a big difference to the effort required. The newer pedal and box is often fitted to older Defenders. Hang on! This is the Disco forum! I don't...

The 300tdi crank drives the oil pump at the front, that is the main difference.

No, but your engine will wear out a lot quicker, especially if you go somewhere dusty. BTDT (and it is dusty here)
