Defender 90 TD5 Fuel Whine - HELP PLEASE

The fuelling to the engine is governed by the pump and the regulator, neither of which are electronic or coupled to the ECU. If the Air Flow Meter fails or is disconnected, the system goes to a default setting which will under-fuel rather than the opposite. So if your AFM fails, your engine...

    Are Bearmach genuine parts??

Some Bearmach stuff is OEM, for example their caliper kits which are AP. The ****part ones are useless as the tin rings are the wrong section. Often the Bearmach OEM parts have a G at the end of the part no. The Bearmach 300tdi cambelt kit is better than Genuine because the crank pinion...

Ah, I'll try that next time. Maybe it will cut down on the swearing :p

    Big Problems

I know it's not the same engine, but we have had to strip a recently overhauled 2.25 petrol motor that was not run in properly and had glazed the bores. I know it goes against the grain to accelerate hard in a newly-overhauled engine but it is the way to bed the rings in. If you google on...

    TD5 acceleration stutters

Pull the plug under the front of the tappet cover - you'll have to take off the plastic cover to get to it. Look to see if there is oil in there. It could be your Air Flow Meter, but to check that it has to go onto a computer.

    TD5 acceleration stutters

On a Defender, the ECU is under the driver's seat. The plug to the engine is the red one. Don't bother with the others. Also under the seat are several important relays including one that runs the fuel pump.

    TD5 acceleration stutters

Put it on a computer and check the fuelling, though if you can't do that easily or cheaply check the red plug on the ECU for oil. If it is oily, clean it out using brake cleaner. You may then have to change the injector harness, which is not too expensive. Destroy the seal between the...

If you have a socket set, you just try all of them until one fits. If none fits, get a different socket set.

Defender 90 TD5 Fuel Whine - HELP PLEASE

AFAIK the air flow meter and the fuel pump have no connection, electrical or electronic. The ECU doesn't even know what the fuel pump pressure is. So changing the AFM will not and can not stop a whine in the fuel pump.

    Losing engine coolant problems

You have to be VERY careful doing a pressure test on a diesel that is using coolant. If it is losing pressure and you can't see it it could be leaking into the piston crowns. If that is the case, when you turn it over on the starter it will hydraulic and bend the con rod(s). Best to try to...

    my 300tdi keeps cutting out

Spiders are FTD - they don't stop the experienced thief from stealing your car but they will stop you from starting it when you least expect it. A decent auto electrician will do the job easily as they remove lots of them. Well, here in Africa they get removed because the last thing you want...

Which Oils To Use + Swivel Grease

MTF-94 is sometimes hard to get, though I think LR Stealers™ sell it in the UK. Difflock make a good synthetic, so I hear, it is a 70w GL-4. So is Redline MTL, very good but expensive, though you never need to change it. Some people swear by Dexron III synthetic ATF's, like Shell Donax...

Defender 90 TD5 Fuel Whine - HELP PLEASE

If you turn on the ignition the pump will run. If you do not start the engine the pump will switch off after about 30 secs. Actually the ECU switches it off. The click is the fuel pump relay. Try this though, put foot flat on accelerator and switch on ignition and start the engine. This...

    TD5 auto won't go

Thanks, but we've changed the inj. washers and have now substituted every sensor and the ECU. No change. The owner is going to sell it on auction, we think.

    TD5 auto won't go

Hi folks, we have a TD5 auto in the workshop which sometimes goes, especially from cold. After a while the engine just stops and strange electrical things happen. These are: Check engine light comes on, then goes off, etc Red temp light comes on, temp gauge goes to 0. Fuel pump runs...

    100k Discos

Well, as you know, Landys can be like the street sweepers broom, but this one has had an engine overhaul at about 300k, a new turbo at the same time, the transfer box replaced as the original ran out of oil and lost all its teeth, and a new cylinder head the other day as he lent it to a friend...

    100k Discos

My Defender (95 model 300tdi) has also done 261 000. Oh, but hang on, that is kilometers :D We do service a 98 300tdi with over 600 000 kms on it. Looks like rubbish, but it goes well.

Does this sound like a burnt valve

Get a 200tdi from a scrap Disco, they seem to be very cheap in the UK, I wouldn't bother with the old motor. We don't get rust here so there are no cheap scrap Discos :(
