Hi I would say it is clear plastic sheathed in black plastic about 6mm as you say, seems to come from the gear selection lever on the auto box, maybe the black cap is a i way valve? Brian

HI SAINT V8 Spot on I have just traced the ancillary wiring etc and indeed it was part of an in -car phone system, the battery was part of the system and i believe was continually being charged (maybe as a back-up?) I am hoping that this was the culprit in draining my battery over a 5/6 day...
