Conventional wisdom, and the handbook, says it should rise to the mid position and stay there during normal operation. Mine tends to sit at 5 to 12 rather than bang on the middle.

Reckon they had the proper armrest with tray and swapped the armrest for solid one for some reason. Probably because with a tray everything presumably falls out when you raise the armrest.

Yep. :D Its deffo an armrest tray that wont fit my solid armrest. It is useful in the drivers door pocket to keep a few coins though.

Is yours pre or post facelift? (2003 ish) as this dont look like it should sit there in mine? Well it could but it would not look as if designed to. Then again on a Freelander what does look as if thoughtfully designed? :D

Thanks (and to Fake Elvis) pretty sure thats what it is. I just seem to have an older armrest - solid and hard plastic. May have been changed as you say.

There is a small recess behind the auto stick, sort of a dished area, too big for that, there is a sort of slot in front of the stick under the ashtray/lighter now you mention it, but the rubber thingy would be like a drawer in there? I will give it a try tomorrow though, but suspect it is...
