A good idea for those plastic filters is to connect one in parallel with the normal filter with a couple of “T” pieces and a little ball valve so that if the standard filter blocks you can just open the valve and use the plastic filter until you get the chance to replace the original filter.

200 & 300tdi while being direct injection still have glow plugs (most direct injection engines do not) which will make them less susceptible to ring gumming but I would still not want to use 100% veg oil. The ring gumming appears to take a long time to become a problem so might not show...
