Do it properly get it fixed, even if you do it after the MOT.

Doesnt matter what you put it on it'll work but it will need to be adjusted to suit i.e. Re-jetting carb or Remapping ECU. BTW Cone filters sometimes make performance worse, because they draw hot engine in from inside the engine bay that the air box wouldn't. Cone filters Do work better in...
