Disco 2 Alternator Removal - Battery Red Warning Light

2.1V per cell x 6 cells = 12.6V DC (no load - measured across battery posts).

Yes! I'm suspecting some leaking oil somewhere there - notice oil underneath the engine and oil over at the bottom end of the intercooler on the driver's side!! The front camshaft seal was replaced over a year ago and no oil leaking from there anymore. Will see for sure when I finish removing...

Rectifier converts AC to DC, so if it's (rectifier) not working thenAC voltage will be measured on the battery leads? The battery posts itself show c.12.6V? Is this what you mean?

That's something that's great to know!!! Thanks! I did wonder if there was a way (DMM tests) to determine whether the rectifier and/or regulator were faulty; I guess if the brushes are worn away then that is obvious! Brushes have done 260,000km so I'm guessing they might have just given up...

Yes, glad I read about that seal (mentioned in RAVE that it has to be replaced)! I recently replaced the bearing in my A/C pulley and also put a new tensioner in (bearing very scratchy), so I'm assuming the bearing inside the pulley should ideally be replaced? I guess there would also be a...

Disco 2 Alternator Removal - Battery Red Warning Light

Been looking around, RAVE mentions this o-ring, and I believe the details are here: “Lip Seal (alternator to vacuum pump) Measures 17 mm x 30(37) mm x 8 mm Nippon Denso 081103-0080 Common to a few Toyota alternators, can use Toyota p/n 29341-64130” Trying to work out if I can buy a...

I've heard that parts (brush box, rectifier, etc.) for the Denso alternator in the Disco 2 Td5 (and Defender?) are available from Toyota dealers as LandCruisers use the same model alternator. Is that right? Does anyone know the part numbers?

Unfortunately Easter shut-down is upon us and I need to get the Disco up and running asap - worried reco could take a while. I will look-around though and look at that option. With the AUD150 I believe that has all the parts to do a reco yourself?

Disco 2 Alternator Removal - Battery Red Warning Light

I've seen brush/box on eBay and a local supplier sells the brush box and the rectifier pack for AUD 150 as per the link. Why do you think it wouldn't be the brushes and more likely to be the rectifier pack? I did have oil leaking from the front camshaft seal for a while (has been fixed for...

Okay, will look at pulling out the alternator vacuum pump tomorrow and having a look. Checked out RAVE - with vacuum line and the oil in and oil out lines, do they just pull out by hand? No (special) tool or technique required? Here in Australia (local pick-up in Melbourne) I did find this...

2003 Discovery 2 Td5 (250,000 kilometres) Driving along on the highway - all good, suddenly noticed the red "battery" warning light come on and stay on. Around 15km from home, so turned around and headed home without issue, but with the warning light on all the way. When I got home, just to...

    Benefits/downsides on removing EGR valve

    Disco 2 Fuel cooler leak.

Measured width with vernier calipers - original clip (bought the Disco new). Still have the original clic-r clip on at the rear of the fuel cooler - assume it is the same width as I took off at the front? I know there have been incidents with aircraft where the maintenance techs used fasteners...

    Disco 2 Fuel cooler leak.

Yes, sure the LR stealership would have just put in a new cooler. It is a relatively simple fix and very cheap once you know where to source the clamps and o-rings. I just hate our lazy, throw-away culture, and I will occasionally even spend more to fix something rather than throw it away...

    Disco 2 Fuel cooler leak.

I had the original LR clips (r-clip style) and I measured their width as 5mm - they are a strong clip though! The 9mm wide I used seemed ideal - no overhang and easily tightened (don't go overboard - just snug); originally tried a standard hose clamp I had lying around but that was crap - hung...

    Disco 2 Fuel cooler leak.

I bought these Kale clamps from an Australian supplier - I used them and they were perfect. They are out there, but bit hard to find the narrower clamps, and I couldn't find a place handy where I could just get one over the counter (had to buy a box of 10 for AUD 17.50 - roughly GBP 1 per...

    Disco 2 Fuel cooler leak.

I still haven't had a rear leaking seal on the fuel cooler. If it ever happens I'll remove the cooler like you have done here; I guess you can replace the rear seal in-situ, but it would be very fiddly - one of those jobs where small hands would be an advantage!

Disco 2 M&S lights, brief query

Agree with this - that negative terminal clamp is definitely not the best fit - at one stage I put a tin cap over it so the clamp could get better purchase - don't over-tighten as this puts the clamp out of shape! This was my problem with M+S lights quite some time ago! The other time more...

Disco 2 Oil Cooler Coolant Leak - Any Thoughts?

I think you might be right! Water pump leaking a wee bit!? I arrowed a steel pipe with coolant on the outside (not a hose as I said before). Had a look in RAVE but not sure what that steel pipe is for?
