This is the way - the telescopic mirror (with LEDs) - will have to start looking around for one! Thanks for your advice! By the way, from what I've seen so far, looks like the rear seal is like a bath plug, and the front seal is a cap with an o-ring (FKM/Viton)? Wonder why they are different?

Disco 2 Tracking Down Oil Leaks

I just did a bit of reading on a few forums and on one someone said it's highly unlikely that there will be a leak from the rear camshaft seal (ERR5369)? Said they're never a problem, unlike the front camshaft seal?! I replaced the o-ring seal (Viton) in the front camshaft seal and also the...

Thanks for that - you've given me inspiration!!! I'm assuming the rear cam seal is identical to the front one then? I replaced the front one (new Viton (FKM) o-ring) around 18 months ago - it was definitely leaking!

Appreciate the feedback. I'm thinking it might be rear of rocker cover (again) and/or rear cam seal - just like what you're experiencing. Not sure how to tackle the rear cam seal (have heard you need to have the arms of a gibbon to access it)!!!

Disco 2 Tracking Down Oil Leaks

Changed the FPR around 2 years ago - all dry around there when I checked and no diesel smell. Also changed the HP diesel fuel line around a year ago (used a fair bit of anti-chafe tape when I did it - it had been done by a dealer twice before over a four-year period) - that makes a mess, and...

Sounds like I need the arms of a gibbon and the dexterity of a seamstress!!! Hate eventually taking something off and realising it's even harder to put it back on! Guess I have to remove it in order to check rear camshaft seal, half-moon on gasket, or rocker cover!

Thanks - great list to work through! Have to get one of those telescopic mirrors!

Disco 2 Tracking Down Oil Leaks

Okay, the front camshaft seal was replaced around a year ago, and no oil tracking down the front of the engine anymore. Alternator brushes were all oiled-up and the alternator body, vacuum pump, and the general area around and below the alternator/vacuum pump was coated with oil; this all looks...

Disco 2 Alternator Vacuum Pump Oil Leak

Running for several days now with alternator/vacuum pump - steady 14.6V from the alternator and no oil observed - all good. The old unit was covered in oil, and so was the driver's side front axle area, steering box area, and the bottom of the battery box and intercooler hose. I cleaned all...

Disco 2 Alternator Vacuum Pump Oil Leak

14.6V measured with engine running and no observable oil leaks. So, all good! The AUD75 alternator tested good (stator and rotor windings, slip rings, brushes and rectifier) before installation, so, I'm very happy with that purchase - reckon it'll last many years (I might need to change...

Yes, the net has made things easier - forums, YouTube videos, step-by-step guides and online manuals. On the other hand, vehicles have got more complicated with a lot more electronics, requiring specialist tools and knowledge in many cases.

Disco 2 Alternator Vacuum Pump Oil Leak

Later on I'm going to see if I can clean the old (my original Denso) alternator windings with mineral spirits and get it working again. The problem will be slip rings - I have to find a guide on how to replace them!

Engine area around alternator cleaned (never been cleaned before) of oil with a citrus foaming degreaser and old rags. Disco 2 Alternator Vacuum Pump Oil Leak

Suspect oil leaking from the oil feed hose (YKL100120) and/or the banjo bolt area. The "new" used alternator/vacuum pump has no oil on it whatsoever, so that's good - indicates internal seals were fine. I also checked the camshaft seal area again at the front of the engine - spotless, but this...

Td5 vacuum pump oil feed and drain

Okay, the used alternator looks good and the vacuum pump shows no signs of leakage. I'll just put it all back in and see how it goes: Will re-use my two original copper washers on banjo bolt Will re-use my original oil line (YKL100120) - bit suspicious this could be source of leak - apparently...

Wreckers selling for AUD 200 - 250 over here - not reconditioned, just "as is" condition; I asked one seller if he could check the condition of the slip rings and he said I could check for myself after I bought it! The used units are mainly purchased if someone (private or second-hand dealer)...

Td5 vacuum pump oil feed and drain

Undid the Banjo bolt - two copper washers there as expected - clearly not the same as the sump plug crushable copper washer! Can I "rejuvenate" these copper washers so I can use them again, or do I have to find new copper washers of the right size somewhere?

Td5 vacuum pump oil feed and drain

Thanks for that! I'm changing over my alternator/vacuum pump now and suspect that oil was leaking from the banjo bolt area on the underside of the vacuum pump, as well as potentially from the vacuum pump lip seal (Denso 081103-0080 or Toyota 29341-64130) between the vacuum pump and alternator...
