Hi Dave, I'm new to towing with an auto. I have a Disco 2 with 255 55 18 tyres. These were standard on the Metropolis. I tow a caravan weighing around 1700kg. Does selecting 3 when towing mean I am limited to 45mph ? I'm also looking for some new tyres and thinking about general grabbers...

A good point, and your right about the Mondeo, I may be expecting too much performance wise from the Disco in comparison. I suppose everything is a compromise. My Mondeo was useless towing the caravan off in a wet field and didn't feel as stable as the Disco but ate the miles with ease.

I've a mondeo 2.2 150 bhp and it is a very good tow car but I got the disco 200tdi because of the weight ratio. The disco is fine once you are moving on the flat.

Thanks for the replies. darrenm thats's good to know. I'm going to see an auto this Sunday. I've just been reading about the VW Touareg 3.0 4x4 diesel as a tow car and it looks pretty awesome. MPG is good but maintenance seems a fair old bit and they don't have seven seats.

I have the same problem with my 200tdi, wondering whether to upgrade to a TD5 and have it re mapped, or I've seen a 3.0 V6 diesel VW Touareg for the same money. On steep hills the Disco doesnt seem to have the power or torque to keep a respectable speed.

Yep tyres are standard, I am looking at a TD5 auto next week which I certainly will get remapped. Thanks goonarmy, however I don't consider 70 unsafe, my post talks about power/torque for overtaking. If idiots in cars and those towing caravans didnt sit at 50 to 55 in lane 1 on the motorway...
