Thanks for the replies. Yes it should be possible to reweld it but it can be hit or miss, clamp it up and a small touch of weld, file it back and that should be it in theory. The link to the rings company looks like its second hand ones - judging by their surcharge - which have been welded...

Today I spent two hours removing a front nearside abs sensor (2001 TD4) and on giving the wheel a sping to check the reluctor ring, yes, you've guessed, broken and spinning freely. Question is can the ring be bought as a replacement item or is it yet another second hand shaft to go on?

Sounds like they used the wrong connection. If it was testbook there are two different cables, blue or brown. Otherwise it could just have been a poor connection. Try it again, maybe with another machine.

Does the window drop half an inch when you open the back door? It should then go up when it closes. Make sure when the door is closed that the window is fully up i.e. the back window opens and closes like a side window worked by a button on the dash. If it's not fully closed then it wont sense...

You could have a reluctor ring away. The front ones are easier to check. Have a look underneath and on each hub you will see a small squareish opening. Inside you will see the reluctor which is a perforated strip around the inner hub. They can crack and slip which will show as a fault. With use...

Could still be dirt in the system. Overuse of cleaning discs can damage the lens and not clean out the residual dirt. When I said use an air line, I obviously didn't mean to blast it in the slot and hope it worked but more the automated equivalent of blowing into it without losing your breath...

Don't know if connected as the back light worked all the time we had the same prob with an internal light. I changed the bulb in it and it ame back to life again. As far as I am aware the tailgate light works off the boot lock although never actually investigated. Will have a check around.

If the car is '98 on the thing resets itself to the key when you put it in the ignition. One flash of the led as you put it in. It's the older ones that either need the left, right push button trick or the EKA code every time. (Don't get me wrong the newer ones do need their EKAs as well...

Could be the light unit gone internally. They can get a bit condensation in them and it's a pcb at the back of the light rather than just a couple of wires.

Certainly wire it separately. The rear window stays on for about 10 minutes?? and front ones normally stay on for about one or two. Leaving it on longer would cause something to burn out - then what would the insurance say!

Do each window in turn. Press down to open and when it gets fully down immediately rock the switch up and when the window closes hold the switch in the up position and the dash will say 'window set'. Repeat for each of the others and you will have one touch opening and no longer the four...
