As said already, easy check, take a wire from earth (body metalwork or the black banana plug socket) and touch the other end on the other connection for each gauge, if the regulator is doing its job the gauges should go to full/hot. If they dont you may have a duff regulator...just because it...

Bleed the cav pump until diesel runs from the bleed screws, any air in the system will cause you problems. Ensure all earth lead connections are clean and tight. Dip the clutch to lighten load on starter motor. Best of luck.

The other thing to check is the ignition switch, is it original? I discovered mine was for a petrol engine (3 position) so wired it with a push button to the starter solenoid, it may be that your heaters are on with the starter motor, not good for fast starting.

Series(original) or parallel(new style) heater plugs? Blue/white & Brown/white wires are to the heater bulb, shown where thery connect to the balast resistor on the baulkhead..

On a diesel one connector is fuel level the other is low fuel warning, swapping them over will tell you nothing useful. Have you got a matched pair (sender/meter)? An old type meter, the one with the shaped needle will not work with a modern flat top sender.

I have to say that on landrover forums I always assume that the MOT is a "first since rebuild" one.... :)
