yup, i did this as well, had to move one of the catches on the door piller down a fair bit but the doors now shut fully with a normal strenght slam.... .... no more boot prints on the doors for me!!! :D

is the starter motor turning correctly when you hold the igntion on? i had a similar problem that turned out to be the starter solenoid, it wasnt allowing full current flow to the starter, which was like the battery was flat. i never had any burning smells though. if you've been replacing...

i ran my perkins 4203 with a k&n like cone filter, it ran a lot cooler than with the oil bath type, almost 1/4 of the temp gauge lower! but it also made a hell of a lot more noise in the form of a very deep drone and annoying drone!

think that's one of those moments that you look round to check no one else saw your mistake and then never mention it to anyone!! :D
