ians3, redhand, slob -- you're all correct.... Was ye old fanbelt ! bought a brand new wider one, it doesn't sit a far down the pully... used a small rachet strap to get alt in position and tensioned up, horsed all the bolts... Started 13.6V, all lights on and heater, 13.6V :D Well...

redhand -- not ignored, most appreciated! The belt is a tight as I can get it, next to levering it with a wack off screw driver. I cannot move the pully with me hand, and there isn't much play on the belt... also it doesn't squeek when engine is on...

thanks for all your replies... I am calling it a day for today.... I have a proper car electrician visiting tommorow, so hopefully get a good result! will keep you all posted (am still betting in a broke brand new alt !)

Hi Bushtoy The voltages mentioned earlier where done with the new battery in... I have the old one on charge atm

I think the top part could be from the montego turbo conversion, I have googled the serial and comes back as a heater plug relay, not sure about the box under it (one with yellow paint)....

Treworgey 90 - brand new batt, brand new alt.... damn ! am getting somebody (experienced !!) to have a look at it tomorrow... should be able to tell you more. I am thinking that me brand new alt is kapput.

redhand - with all the lights on and main beam voltage drops down to 11.5V, after 5 minutes of idle it is upto 12V (still lower than battery with engine off). However if I blip the throttle it immediatly drops down to 11.5V again.

bushtoy - the black box is for the glow plugs I think, it has a + pick up from the battery and earths through the wing. I don't think the landy has a seperate voltage regulator (I could be wrong tho!) as the engine is a 2ltr Perkis Prima (montego turbo diesel) and has a brand new modern 3 pin...

OK, two days of tinkering later and I have made a little progress. Voltage across the battery with engine off = 12.5V Voltage with engine on, glow plugs on = 11.5V glow plugs off = 12.7V here something interesting happens.... If I leave it idling...

some wires from battery go into a black bosch box -- is this a voltage regulator ?

3 leads comming from back of alt, two thick ones and a thin one. the two thick ones both look like they go to the positive side of the battery. (two thick wires at bottom of battery picture) the thin one disappears into the bulkhead..
