You need both, left & right hand. The non grease able ones should be sealed for life, but the ones with the nipple need more maintaince but I think are better. Loads of videos on you tube. Just remember to count the number of turns it takes to unwind then your tracking should be close enough...

Sounds like either starter has gone, bad earth some where, have you tried rocking it in gear then try starting again?
