Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

Cam button - the button was supplied by Rover for a long time for after sales fitment to these engines. In later engines a retainer plate was added so even Rover must have thought that physical restraint was a good idea. The standard and aftermarket cams for these engines have a small gradient...

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

Have you seen this page Sam - it's quite good for diagrams on things like that. pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com If you search for 'thrust' here: Rover V8 Engines, Parts and Services from V8 Tuner you get the relevant part. It was a standard rover part for a while as a recommended...

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

Spark plug thingy - get an old spark plug and take the centre gubbins out. Weld or glue a piece of steel in the end long enough so that it touches the piston at 10-15 degs BTDC (glue or weld well - you don't want it to come out!). Turn the engine roughly to 20 degs BTDC and put the plug in...

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

PS you can get the rocker covers to a mirror polish finish but it takes a bl**dy long time!

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

Hi, Whilse you've got the engine on the stand check that TDC is correct - the dead stop (old spark plug with a bolt welded on the end) method is as good as any. That way you will know that the timing is spot on. The factory TDC mark on mine was about 8degs out which affects timing massively...

    Spigot bush failure?

Update... After much searching, head scratching etc etc I found it was the fan that had siezed causing the screech. It was the fact that it would only do it under load that made it more difficult to work out but hanging a head out of the window while driving tied it down to the engine bay...

    Spigot bush failure?

Thanks Jugg. Can't quite work out what was jammed - was it the release bearing that was the culprit? Sounds like I'm splitting the box then - I'd agree with you that it can't be sensible not to change everything while the box is split. What sort of a job is it? I've got a pit and am...

    Straight through exhaust???

Now there's a thought... Do you think if you cut a 4" hole in the rear chassis and welded a pipe in its place for the exhaust to pass through that would be as strong. Usually in a box section that preserves the strength. Alternatively you could weld the pipe itself in and then put flexible...

    Straight through exhaust???

OK - that makes sense now. Thanks for the advice. I'm not necessarily set on the 2 pipes but its a bit unusual and sounds like a fun thing to try!

    Spigot bush failure?

Thanks James. Its noisy when the clutch is fully depressed but fine when the engine is engaged. From what you say and the symptoms I have it might not be either as it should either be noisy all the time or noisy until the clutch pedal is half depressed - this is noisy when the clutch is...

    Spigot bush failure?

Morning All, I've got a slightly odd fault with my 110 300tdi. At idle or revving when not moving the engine is sweet. At speed (and in gear) the engine is sweet. However when I depress the clutch whether to come to a stop or change gear just as the engine is returning to idle speed I get...

    Straight through exhaust???

So with the Y piece, it is really a requirement to bring the two banks together shortly after the headers? If I go 4-2-1 on each side, bring the banks together into a 3" pipe and then split them out again, will that do the job? I don't have an ECU so hopefully any adjustments that are...

    black deposits on rotor arm?

All sounds to me like it might be a timing issue. Have you checked that the vacuum advance is working freely, mechanical advance is operating as it should (not stuck on max advance for instance), checked that the TDC mark is correct etc. The bad starting and delay in the throttle suggests that...

    Straight through exhaust???

Interesting what is said about the Y piece - I'd not heard that before. Where does the Y need to go? I assume it's not to join the 2 banks otherwise the engine would never work in things like Cobras which have side pipes.

    Straight through exhaust???

What are muffled headers? Will they not restrict flow significantly from the exhaust ports? Interestingly I took a TVR silencer apart recently (obviously not to weld straight through pipes in and weld it back together) and the silencer was only a piece of perforated pipe surrounded by...

    Straight through exhaust???

Not that bothered about it being very loud - I just don't want to muffle the V8 too much. I've spent a lot of time on the engine itself (9 months and counting) so to do all of that and then restrict the flow by silencing any more than necessary seems a shame. Any ideas what sort of db that set...

    Straight through exhaust???

Thanks Jon, I thought that might be the case. I'm tempted to have an exhaust each side (why not make a job as complicated as it possible can be whenever possible is my motto!!) but I think it might be an idea to put it through a central box of some sort, or I suppose a smaller one on either...

    LT85 v R380

Sorry - should have given a bit more information. The R380 came off a Defender and the LT85 that I have is a split case.

    Straight through exhaust???

Has anyone done this on a V8 90? I was going to put the exits, one each side in the quarter panels at the back behind the wheels so two pipes, one from each bank, probably in 70mm stainless. I've read everything about silencers and I realise that I run the risk - so be it, but I was...
