Depending which defender you have lots of kits on eBay etc. which are fitted without splicing wires, soldering connections and so on. I replaced 12n electrics with 13 pin in a couple of hours using Land Rover genuine harness to suit new caravan - and I am no electrician.

Slacken off locknuts and let the internal spring in the master cylinder push the rod fully out. Then tighten locknuts keeping rod in same position. You should have a little free play in pedal when it is operated. This will set cylinder stroke.

mine has M10 x 150mm bolts, but these allow for a spacer between chassis and side plate of guard. Chassis legs are about 85mm wide, so add to this 15mm for nut and washer, 10 - 15mm extra for assembly, and thickness of your guard side plate with spacer if any to get length of bolt required...

You will find that the bolt is already through the chassis

If you reverse to the caravan at an angle the rear door open can get in the way. Take the plastic handle off the stabiliser (longish Allen screw). The two arms will then fit under your spare wheel. I welded large washer to Allen screw to make it into a wing nut.
