the complete story... manifold gasket, head off and inspected valves, piston heads and chambers, tappet guides and cam followers, timing belt change, tensioner pulley change, serpentine belt change, serpentine belt tensioner change... then i set the timing out by 180 (tiredness!) and destroyed...

ok, so i have now had the head off, inspected tappet guides, cam followers, piston tops, valves, full rocker disassemble and inspect, manifold gasket, new vac pump. next one is the cam belt tensioner bearing. fun fun fun :0)

hi foz did you resolve it? i have the same issue... i have checked stem caps, set tappits, changed manifold gasket, checked vacuum, checked push rods, checked pulley bearings and it is still there...

hi dcc. i replaced the gasket but with no effect. i have listened through the entire engine and to no avail... the search continues.

thanks but for what she uses it for i think i will leave it as 2 wheel drive, we have the 90 for if she is ever snowed in! seems to be a regular occurance as it went just before we bought it (50k ago) and it had just done 70k then. a refurb went in and now BOOM! thanks for the offer though!

it varies with engine speed, and seems to be at engine speed. how would i check if its the vac pump (seems to be the easiest check!)

i have an interesting problem... i have what sounds like a tappit rattle at approx 2000 revs plus, whether in drive or stationary. i have checked all valve stem caps, set all clearances and also replaced the exhaust manifold gasket. in short the obvious ones. it seems to be down on power too...

seems like it is the IRD. it is now 2 wheel drive!

Hi. My missuses freelander makes a large clonk in reverse on right lock. thoughts are: 1. inner CV gone 2. prop shaft gone 3. all of the above 4. IRD gone 5. VCU gone causing all the above. I have followed the post from Mad Hat Man on testing the VCU and it seems OK. the O/S drive...

Lesson learned. Apologies to all. Penis out! Oh, and once ive fitted the dump valve i'll figure out how to fit the sink and taps for ya blue beasty!
