I think most UK registered BMW's had the left / right headlamp lever and feel sure it was for temporary use whilst touring Europe etc but doubt it will pass OP's MOT tho that would be too simple :rolleyes:

Could be the gear selector cable has broken or the arm on selector switch has come adrift have a look underneath both are easily visible :)
