Lining up the flywheel with the torque converter

P38. 4L I marked it up as recommended but when I removed the block I noticed that the shaft isn't splined. Surely then, when I re-fit the motor, all I need to do is rotate the crank and the flywheel will slide round so I can feel when the bolt holes line up? Unless I'm missing...

Checking just before I remove the block

The workshop manual mentions marking the drive plate and converter and also removing 4 bolts securing the drive plate to the converter. Can anyone elaborate on that, I've removed the plate but I'm not sure what I'm looking at......

Checking just before I remove the block

what I need to undo to separate the block from the gearbox as I'm leaving that in-situ. I'd rather not go pulling and pushing until I know everything's undone.........I'm completely stripped down to the block and box so it should be straightforward

    Help diagnosing head gasket

yeah, had a chat with Joe....really nice chap but not the bearer of good news. He's certain, after asking a few specific questions, that it is indeed a cracked block. I'll need to liberate £500 to get one.......no huge issue as I got the car for good money and I'll know it's right once...

    Help diagnosing head gasket

Heads confirmed as being straight, no liner slippage and upon closer inspection damage can clearly be seen to the head gasket. Engine had a slight ticking noise caused by a worn push rod, maybe in turn caused by a worn cam.....given the prices of parts from Island 4x4 it might as well go back...

    Help diagnosing head gasket

So both heads are off now and I'm struggling to find the problem. Thankfully I think I can discount a slipped liner, but I can't find any problems on the head gaskets. Cyliner #1 on the left bank appeard to have water in it. I can only think of a warped head which I'll have looked at this...

I assume this is what a slipped liner looks like

Gasket on that side looks new with no breaches. I'll whip the other side off tomorrow and get better pictures.

I assume this is what a slipped liner looks like

there's no lip, it's completely smooth, could it be a new liner? The heads look new and so do the HG's

I assume this is what a slipped liner looks like

I wrote a single entry in my diary today, it said, simply......"bugger" Also think I've found what was causing the ticking: further investigation required on that one, but thoughts on the bottom end appreciated?

    P38 Head gasket woes

The short engine looks absolutely brand new. Hoping that the liners are good. There are absolutely no fluids leaking so I don't think it's cracked. I'll strip it down on Saturday and let you know what I find. Where's best to buy a gasket kit?.....loads on e-bay but I assume there are...

    P38 Head gasket woes

Similar to DoZZa's thread. Mine is a 4.0 Driving along, engine starts to rattle badly so pull over, steam from the engine bay so it's overheated (temp guage was reading normal). Call out the AA, by the time he arrives, it starts and runs fine then blows steam out of BOTH exhausts and over...

I did an engine flush and oil change yesterday to no avail

    Engine tick (tappets)

Sounds like to be just one one valve, I've checked out things like loose spark plugs and manifold gaskets, all OK. Thing is, a mechanic friend of mine says that it's a full cam, rods, rockers and tappets job. It's not a loud noise but I like silky smooth engines (especially V8's). Is there...

    P38 4.0 Tickover shooting up

Ticks over fine when the auto box is in D and you've pulled up, but if you knock it into N at traffic lights for example it shoots up to 1500rpm and stays there. I'm thinking idle control valve?

    Newbie with wonky P38

Replacing the original suspension certainly seems the way to go, it seems to have everything apart from the air bags. I've not looked at it in great detail thus far, hoping to spend a good portion of the weekend having a root around. What's the process for removing the springs? Is it a big...

    Newbie with wonky P38

Good morning chaps. I've just picked up a cracking 4.0 P38 (see pic below) for a song, it's got a few little gremlins to sort but I'm working my way through them. It's been converted to coils and the drivers side is noticably lower than the passenger side, about 25mm when measured between...
