    As said above, it's the gutter. On early vehicles, it was a separate Galvanised Steel part, sandwiched between the roof panel and the side panels, when they were bolted together. On later vehicles, it's as shown in your pictures, an Aluminium pressing that's spot-welded to the roof panel. .

    It's not possible to wire it incorrectly, the set/resume switch plugs in to an existing connector. Both the horn switches and the set/resume switch go through the rotary coupler on the steering wheel. This could be shorting between the two circuits. .
