4.0 litre pistons will only increase the compression ratio.........the swept volume will remain the same ie 4.6 litres

I'de recommend a Milwakee , it undoes anything , not cheap but I've tried cheaper ones and I end up frustrated when they dont undo something

2002 Discovery 2 manual ES.......leccy seats, windows etc, twin sunroofs , rear one leaks , front ones been sealed shut by previous owner 99,000 miles.....TD5 silver with tan leather , fitted with ACE , 7 seats ( if you can figure out how to use them £3250 ono, service history...

I had similiar gearbox issues with a Freelander 1 TD4 auto...........remove the radio/CD player and look carefully on the rear face it for blackened scortch marks........over time the wiring loom chafes on the back of the radio intermittant;y shorting out the canbus wiring.........also check...

If its a 4.6 ......and you want to sell it ........I;de be interested in it

4.0 and 4.6 share the same bore size.........putting a 4.0 crank , rods and pistons into a 4.6 block will give you a 4.0..........4.0 pistons into a 4.6 engine will raise the compression ratio .........hope that helps

Compresion test should be carried out with engine hot and throttle wide open.......did you do it like that ?

I've heard of timing chain "stretch" on that engine around 100,000 miles

Its never let me down........unlike the Porsche that destroyed the engine and the TVR roars like a lion, I grin ear to ear every time I drive it

What makes you think its got a cracked head ?........ I can see pitted case hardening on the rockers and hard sludge/carbon build up elsewhere ( typical of high miles and a lack of oil changes)
