try putting it in 1st, then turning off the engine, then release the clutch, then re-engage the clutch, put it inot neutral, apply the handbrake, release the handrake, press the horn twice, get your missus to get out and push u backwards while you gently lean on the gear lever into reverse and...

Stick to recommended spec oil for your engine, trying to go for a 'thicker' grade will more than likely cause more problems than it will solve, as oils don't behave as most people think they do.

There is no synchromesh on reverse gear, so if anything is still tyrning you get a crunch, try selecting 1st, keep foot on clutch fully then select reverse, synchro in 1st should stop everything making reverse gear selection easier.

Try the Stall test from RAVE manual - will test Torque Convertor for you;

Not necessarily, could still be something like handbrake, but I would expect noise or vibration etc from that. Can't immediately think why torque converter would struggle only in reverse to be honest, let me think on it :p

No is the answer to your question, there is only 1 reverse gear in the gearbox, and if it works fine in one range then the gear itself is ok, the transfer box doesn't care whether it's in forward or reverse. I would guess that maybe you have an automatic and the torque converter is causing your...

First thing to check is that the selector top plate spring return mechanism isnt borked, accessed from above, below centre console it's a riveted metal plate with a spring either side that should return lever to 3-4 in gearbox, just possible its fooked, sounds more major......but good luck!
