    red knob probs

Seems like you'r stuck in 4WD low range. Was the vehicle in 4WD high range before you pulled the red lever back.?If so it seems the yellow button has not popped up.,thus preventig you from selecting high range 2WD.Take the floor panel up and try the old kettle of hot water trick on the front of...

    which free wheel hubs?

I think the best thing I can do is post a picture of them. For we all know a picture speaks louder than words ,and it would be intreresting to find out about them. Many Thanks once again for all your comments/observations. :)

    which free wheel hubs?

What I've been saying is their is nothing on the fwh to allow you to engage /disengage . They do not turn by hand or cannot be locked /unlocked by means of a wrench.(no central stud or nut) I don't know much about them although when the 4WD was selected and became temp stuck during its MOT,they...

    which free wheel hubs?

As far as I know they can only be engaged by selecting FWD on the main gearbox. I don't go off road with the vehicle, and do believe that driving on tarmac with them engaged would lead to wind up. I recently replaced an outer seal on one side(slight weeping of oil)also checking the axle level...

    RRC Central locking.(again)

 One of the first things that I did was to compare like for like with the rods when I was swapping over the locking servos. Everthing tallied. I've just popped out and would you believe it the b.....y thing worked, however on returning to unlock the same problem reoccured. As you can well...

    RRC Central locking.(again)

On the door locking mechanism (drivers door) I beleive their is a spring that releases the catch. Is it common for these to fail ?weaken thus preventing the catch to release fully. I swapped the servos over on the front doors thus eliminating the possibility of failure ,but the door release...

    which free wheel hubs?

Then again when you have automatic FWH fitted that problem never arises. They were on the vehicle when I bought it years ago,and to date have not really found out much about them . All I know is that they don't really make that much difference mpg wise, but if the worst comes to the worst all...

    70 mph max???

Have you got cruise control on your vehicle ? If so it could have been set to 70 mph . Its a reasonable enough assumption, so have a look at your owners hand book and take it from there. It's only a wild guess.

    VM or TDI ?

I meant 200 tdi not 300. To the best of my knowledge the 300tdi did not appear until about March 1994,and then I do beleive it was only available from Land Rover with automatic transmission. Sorry abot the faux pas .:o

    Damn MOT

What you got to realise is, some people (MOT testers) are just not familiar with older vehicles and therefore mot them as they would a modern vehicle. You have every right to query it ,(tread carefully especially if your going to keep on using the same garage)and if necessary appeal the...

    series 3 to coil springs?

It's all well and good getting a converted chassis from disigna etc , but then your'e going to have to convert your existing axles to to be able to use coil springs . This can be a problem and that is why some people opt for changing the axles and also benefitting from disc brakes . Then you'll...

    Stuck removing the engine

In the past have come across people using silicone sealant (the stuff you get from B&Q ,Halfords etc)as a gasket substitute. Does the job but is a pig to seperate as most of them are adhesives:

    Which Oil?

Over the years have always used 20/50,although have been known to use on occasions 15/50,and always changing the filter at the same time. This being done at intervals of 3000/4000 miles. Some might disagree about the regularity but then that's down to personnal choice .:D

    spark plugs

With regard to the Rover v8 engine I have always used Champion plugs contrary to what anyone else says about them, and have never had a single problem. I,m talking some thirty odd years of use.:p ;)

    Petrol engines in a Series

Never had any problems in the late fifties, and then we were using a mere 74 octane to lug everthing and the kitchen around with us.

The 2.6 in my series was binned . Replaced with a 3 litre straight six from a rover P5, together with the 4.3 .diffs .It bolted straight on to the gearbox but had to cut away part of the bulk head as the engine sits a lot higher. It went extremly well, but alas when four star petrol went...

    series 3 with ford v6
