It was sat in the follower where the end of the push rod sits usually!

I think the owner would be abit ****ed off to find something snooping around his car and lifting the bonnet!

Got it off, timing cover is off as well, nowt broken in there thankfully. I've no idea how i check if the timing is out though  I presume i should just leave it along untill i've rebuild everything, then follow guide in workshop manual to redo it? Had a look at the pistons, obvious...

Is there another way of locking the engine? I've got quite abit of the engine off and very little oil in it so dont fancy trying to use the starter motor. No air or battery gun either

Another questions i'm afraid. How on earth do you get the crank start dog off so you can remove timing cover? I've tried with the engine in gear but no luck

They are intact and move freely up and down the guides. On one of them though, it seems to have less movement downwards than the others?

As i see, i thought it might be those, just wasnt sure. I presume they just need to be still in one piece with no bit scores in them or anything?

What about the oil in the bores, should i check the pistons somehow?

Here are the valves I checked them on a straight edge and they dont appear to be bent. Here are the pistons Pots 1 and 4 seemed to a slight lining of oil in them, could not feel any scores in the bores though.

Head it off, going to remove all valves in the morning and check them. You could see where they had hit the pistons

Update: So far on the stripping of the engine i've discovered that most of the push rods are bent, some quite badly and one has even had the last inch snapped off  Next off with the head i think and check valves. I suspect its going to be a case of giving this engine a complete rebuild...

What kind of damage would i be seeing from that? Bent pushrods? What would i do to solve it? Replace valves and set cam timing?

Right all work has now stopped on this engine. I tried advancing the pump with no luck. Engine just didnt seem right so i took of the rocker cover to check that the rocker i had replaced was still fine. Then i found that another rocker had snapped in half! When i first started having problems...
