    Detachable tow/recovery arrangements.

These sort of combi affairs are an attractive option being maybe more flexible as a more permanently fixed setup, but I am sure they are compromised as to strength. This one is "rated" at 8 tonne, but the ball only 3.5t. Don't see how that's possible as there is nothing joining the ball to the...

    Detachable tow/recovery arrangements.

I've seen a recovery setup - admittedly American, and on a Jeep - where there is a detachable system, which means you can fit either a normal tow ball hitch for towing or swap for a Nato style if you want recovery mode. Anyone got any pics or experience of anything like this on a Series?

    Recovery Eye fitting

Got some good quality recovery eyes of the "D" type, with 4 bolt holes per eye. I realise that they are fitted through the bumper bolt holes in the chassis, but as there are only 2 each side on my Series 3, am I missing something or is it simply a matter of drilling 2 extra holes to suit...

    Series 3 Chassis replacement

Yeah, I have enough classic Fiat Panda spares to build 2 new ones! Landy spares starting to build up too. At least the Series parts are pretty easy to source; Panda bits are getting a bit more like Gold dust...

    Series 3 Chassis replacement

Yeah, as I was typing this, I had a little laugh. I should say that ALL my cars are old... sorry, "classics", so my definition of "daily driver reliability" is not excessively demanding. But if I can replace unreliable parts and do some careful upgrades in order to reduce the number of occasion...

    Series 3 Chassis replacement

Yeah, wasn't expecting it to be much cheaper, tbh just seeing if I'd missed anything. The delivery charge, however, BURNS. As to repairing, then yes; for my other S2a project, I'll be doing the learning and fixing, but for the S3, I want daily driver levels of reliability and fit'n'forget galv...

    Series 3 Chassis replacement

Well, I am a little confused. Searching for a galv chassis for the S3 has thrown up far fewer than I had thought. Marsden seemingly don't but will in the future, Shielder have gone 90/110, so I'm left with Richards and the thick end of 2228, delivered to Cornwall(£324 !!), bog standard without...

Series gearbox i.d. - yes another one!

Thanks for that. No, it doesn't foul anything and in fact seems reasonably tight, ie not sloppy, generally. I really think we are facing a lack of use type scenario, but we'll see. Yes, it's an 81, and with 33k showing, although we all know how much to believe what a 40yr old mileometer shows!

Series gearbox i.d. - yes another one!

Yes, definitely. Hoping it may all be about lack of use rather than worn out, and therefore able to be freed up and fettled by a good prod around and service.

Series gearbox i.d. - yes another one!

OK, ta for the info. I have a 2a project for it to go into, eventually. It seems to be free and goes into all gears, while not fitted to an engine. Current box in the 3 jumps out of reverse unless I hold it, and that doesn't work if I put any revs on. Also trans box won't go into low range and...

Series gearbox i.d. - yes another one!

Not as far as I can see, just the above numbers. It makes sense to be for a 2/2a as it came along with a 2a needing a rebuild. Do 2a boxes work with early 80's series 3's?

    Lockers, Diffs and Drives.

Being a newbie to the LR world, I was wondering whether you could put me straight about the 4wd system. My S111 88" ('81) has freewheeling hubs. If I lock them and put the vehicle into 4wd by depressing the yellow knob, by my reckoning, I am in 4wd, high ratio. Are the diffs locked in any way...

Series gearbox i.d. - yes another one!

Hi all. My Series 3 has a few gearbox issues and, given I have a spare, lying quietly in the barn, I was wondering if we might use it. It has a plate screwed to the bellhousing that identifies it as a "Factory Rebuilt Unit" and has Part no. 600917 1, and serial number; K11571. Any ideas?

    Any performance to be gained?

Thanks to all. I have found an O/D unit to bolt on and will probably limit my "upgrades" to the Weber, Turner engineering head exchange with porting, and a good service. I really don't want any more speed than the O/D unit will give me; just efficiency and reliability, as far as that is...

    Any performance to be gained?

Hi. Just planning out fettling my '81 88" petrol. Got the Weber. Is there anything else I can plan to do to "improve" the 2.25 petrol? Obvs not looking for anything startling, just want to get the best from the "standard" engine without losing torque and what reliability there may be remaining...

    Land Rover Mechanic in Cornwall

Hi. Anyone have knowledge of/recommendation of a decent Land Rover Series mechanic down here in Cornwall. I am in Truro, but will travel anywhere in Cornwall for an experienced and reliable bloke. I'm sure I don't have to say; no delerships =;-))
