range rover classic tailgate still feckin opening!

Thanks guys. Its beyond the "shutting by corners" routine now - the lower gate will not close on the O/S, so the upper does not reach its pins. I think the body may have a twist in it, that sprung when I repaired the chassis without jigging. As the proverbial "they" say...bugger

    chassis colours

Silver hammerite-type paint sprays well with cellulose thinners/xylene. Looks good, very forgiving on uneven surfaces and cheap enough when bought from a paint factors, un-brand-named. Plant/tractor enamel likewise, available in many colours off the shelf.

Disco 1 Clack clack clack what the hell is that

I was thinking more uneven lobe wear than bearings...bit of a stretch, I know, but I have been playing with Ford built Volvos of late and now my mind runs on strange rails. Could one the feel slack in bearings? Yes, if there was lots, but all the various tensions when running could bring it...

    300tdi inncorect temp reading.

Some years back we toyed with the idea of a coolant level gauge in the header tank. The float sensor can be scrounged from another vehicle but sealing it in proved to be a bit of a faff. Now though, there are hot-glue-gun sticks for repairing plastic bodywork, and, I am told, they work to seal...

Are you up to doing the work yourself? Is expense a massive issue? Doing a seal kit is cheap, many decry it but it will get you back on the road for year or two. Next up is second hand, then exchange unit, re-manufactured route. Doing the work is not difficult...its an awkward bugger, heavy...

    Disco 1 Speedo needle issues

I must say that I agree with your speedo-watching technique, viz-a-vi RRC. I rarely look at the speedo, making more use of the wine of the transfer box along with occasional glances at the rev counter. Hence I have no idea how long this needle bounce has been going on. I only noticed it after I...

Those SP valve tools are nice. My father used one all his working life and I have had one for 25 years. You can make up a piece of tube stock steel, hacksaw and filing to shape, to use with that SP tool. It is a bit fiddly to use, served me for some time though. Have a look in a catalog of...
