Have I made a costly mistake?

Done about 1000 miles since the rebuild, seems to be ok. I have got an oil leak. Can't seem to work out where from though. I thought it was the cam seals but I've change them and it's not made a difference. It could be the cam ladder which is a bit of an annoyance as it means I have to pull it...

Have I made a costly mistake?

Oh no, not kidding! it was disgusting. It was a think orange mouse, greasy and reminded me of the pink slime from ghostbusters. He's a bit of a no hoper when it comes to cars. He also doesn't learn as he took it to the same halfords only weeks before an got them to fit wipers, they fitted the...

Have I made a costly mistake?

After my new found mechanical skills I helped my cousin with his td4 freelancer today. He's a bumptious and took his car to halfords to have his power steering fluid topped up. The staff member poured half a bottle into the coolant. Que a fluid similar to angel delight.

Have I made a costly mistake?

I did the reduction unit oil change yesterday, smelled so bad, my neighbour came out thinking she had a gas leak. The car didn't know what was going in after its first drive.

Have I made a costly mistake?

Done 400 miles, terrible on fuel compared to my Alfa Romeo. Seemed to be losing about 5mm of coolant every 200miles then noticed that the bottom of the inlet manifold was wet. May explain both the poor fuel consumption and the coolant loss. Anyway when I stripped the engine first time it was...

Have I made a costly mistake?

Lights are gone, just needed a run. Took for a few miles, got to running temp nicly, no loss of coolant as far as I can tell, not steam from exhaust. Tiny smear of Mayo under the filler but then when I took the head off the cylinders had coolant in. So I'm assuming it's just clearing that bit...

Have I made a costly mistake?

All done. SO far so good, touch of steam from the exhaust to start with but I think that will be because of the amout of coolant from the previous disaster in the system. It's not leaking externally this time so that's a start. I haven't taken it for a run yet as I'm knackered now and have work...

Have I made a costly mistake?

I did check but I must not of checked hard enough. Any put the old one back one after a good clean and as in the Haynes book of lies checked its flat. It's seems so. Triple checked. Got a Payen bw750 gasket with the blue beading. As suggested. Fitted the head and plumbed it in. Had a minor fart...

    Urgent help needed

Like I said, I could not tell the reason mine boiled over, could of been the cap could of been the HG. Could of been small gremlins farting in the sump. Who cares if you have the option of taking it back then do so. I didn't so I'm doing the work my self, trust me it's a right ball ache. Unless...

    Urgent help needed

Read my thread and you will see how much a chunt they are. I'm only sticking with mine as I paid penny's for it with super low mileage. But it's slowly killing me. If you have the option, take it back and walk away. If not then get all the parts first before you start. It's not a really hard...

Have I made a costly mistake?

I know I'm gonna need to do it again. At least I know how to do it now. So it should be quicker. I know my last head wasn't leaking so that's a positive. The Haynes says the cam ladder can't be interchanged though. I don't see why?!? Especially it ifs sealed with sealant. I'm gutted. I'm not...

Have I made a costly mistake?

Well the celebrations lasts long. I've got home today after being at work to find the coolant lower than I left it. Top it up, start the engine. And low and behold steam comes off the engine. Look in from underneath to find coolant is leaking from the from of the engine between the gasket and...

Have I made a costly mistake?

The gasket as far as I'm aware hadn't gone but it was the original. The system was very dirty. I've replaced the hoses all but the two that go to the heater matrix. I think I'll do as you say, I'll give it a week and clean the bottle. I've had just about enough of working on this car now.

Have I made a costly mistake?

First big test will be Friday as I now have to drive to Devon from Essex and back. Hopefully it will be no drama but will be packing a tool kit and few spare items. Still got a way to go. Got to sort out the track rod ends, drop links and ball joints. It's wrecked my hands though. Last few days...

    steel seal

I've just read this, I'm sure you have fixed this now anyway but are you sure it wasn't just a duff cap? I used steel seal In my old escort gti, before I had the balls to do it all properly. It worked for me and I had the car for a further two years with no coolant loss and tbh I never serviced...

Have I made a costly mistake?

Dishwasher tablets!?!? Are you mad? Yeah it's Pretty minging, I've got no emulsion or anything so I'm hoping the HGC has worked but the grimy deposits and discoloured coolant after a 15 mile run has annoyed me. Especially with the company being 20 quid a 5 l bottle at halfords. My issue is I...
