the grease nipple you are on about is in fact the axle breather, the filler plug is located at the front of the diff casing just behind where the prop fastens on to the flange

if the rails are solid you shouldnt have a problem, but for the price of a new rear member i know what i would do and thats fit a new xmember, job done and finished with, weld it and in 2 years time you could be welding it again

if your seals were leaking you would lose diesel, is it poss your rocker cover is leaking or as there been an overspill of oil when topping up

another thing to check before connecting the battery make sure every thing is switch off, connect the battery at this point ther e should be no sparks on the battery terminals if there are sparks you have a live short some where, are you sure its neg earth and not pos earth
