    Whats this!?

I had the paper gasket behind the drive member leak on mine, if it is that you should be able to see where the oil is seeping out, new gasket for pennies and it's all good. If it's just on front face of wheel and not coming from brake drum it indeed shouldn't be hub seal, most likely cap or...

Ashcrofts reply to my query about their carriage charges ...

I'll try and give an opinion once its done, those splines look perfect...mine were too poor to be called splines...more like 'notches'.

Ashcrofts reply to my query about their carriage charges ...

£980 including clutch kit and fork, oil and fitting. It's a lot I know, but no where else I talked to would do the same for anything less. I already have the cross-drilled gear (brand new) since I was going to put it in as a cheap temporary fix for the spline wear - but upon looking at the...

Ashcrofts reply to my query about their carriage charges ...

Never had a problem with Ashcroft, I'm booked in for a new LT77 from them next month - very pleasant to deal with with arranging booking. Spoken to Dave over email on several occasions and he's always taken time to answer my questions, he is usually to-the-point but answers everything.

    How fast is you Landy?

People like that really boil me blood, see it all the time - woman (yes, it normally is) in expensive SUV-type Audi/Jeep/Merc, automatic, pull out regardless, foot down, no regard for others. Glad your friend was OK, poor Landy though - no sympathy for her whatsoever.

    Defender newby

From what I've heard, fitting a smaller wheel can make the steering 'feel' a bit more responsive/quick, but I have no experience myself - I like the standard wheels. Really, you are driving a bus. :D Perhaps the Defender is not for you if you feel you couldn't live with the steering, as there...

    Snorkel filter

Snorkel connects to intake on filter housing, unsure but I have heard of plugging up drain on underside of filter box (usually lets water/moisture out) to prevent it getting in if deep wading, use lots of silicone sealant. One way to test a snorkel is to cover intake with a plastic bag, engine...

    Still no go!!!

A friend has recently revived his Discovery after it went a little deep - not sure what he had to do fuel-wise to get it going, I think it was a bit like yours though - once the water was out it turned over fine but didn't fire. I'd second James' advice, he's not usually far off. :)

    Still no go!!!

 Not that they don't like it, more that it's bad for engines generally in the long run. Mind you so is taking on water. :p

    Belt Tensioner - Screw Modification?

I'm putting a new serpentine belt tensioner on a 300TDi Discovery as the old one has been squealing and chirping, but I've come across something of interest on the old tensioner after I removed it. It appears someone in the past has stuck a screw in the side of it, for what purpose I am not...

    Ran out of oil! Knocking

Oil doesn't just evaporate, it has to go somewhere, unless it was seriously under filled during it's last oil change - which was when? I'd keep a good eye on the oil level from now on, and make sure you change it regularly to give the engine the best chance of the life it's got left.

    oil running down downpipe

I had oil dripping down the downpipe after the engine had been running, area underneath turbo was covered in an oily mess but it was caused by a leaking turbo oil-feed - from the banjo on top of the turbo. Someone previously had put both copper sealing washers on the same side of the banjo bolt...

    Ran out of oil! Knocking

Could you tell where about in the engine the knocking was coming from? Very low oil levels can cause extreme wear on the big end bearings and these tend to start knocking because the worn/damaged bearing allows the con rod to move about on the crankshaft. This knocking is heard from deep within...
