slotted brake discs on wrong end of axle?

FWIW they do work and have reduced fade on my 200tdi although I still have to eliminate it completly, I use the Disco in competitions (mainly river bed races here in Spain), they rarely see mud so that is not an issue but on the odd occasion they have the mud dries very quickly and turns to dust...

Started to fit the Southdown snorkel ..

I bought a similar kit from 'Wizard' on ebay awhile back, mine came with a neat 'manifold' which is bolted to the bulkhead, then axles, gearboxes, timing cover all meet here and then are routed via a single tube up inside the safari snorkel and exit just below the 'head', I have alos run the...

    Oil leaks Galore.

The turbo return pipe is a RPITA for leaking, it's worth washing down this area before pulling sumps off ect. regards Dave

    wheel bearings

Oil from the differential (EP 90) can pass the seal that is at ech end of the axle tube, this oil can contaminate the bearings by running along the shaft passed the seal into the hub where the bearings are housed, more a problem on the rear as the front it tend to contaminate the swivel housing...

    leaky 200 steering box...

It can be done in situ but is awkward and sometimes you may need a puller to get the drop arm off, when you put it back do the drop arm nut up real tight as they have a habit of coming loose, then bang the lock tab over nice and tight too. regards Dave

    Fan Warning

I would check the rad for crud, tdi's do not overheat in traffic if all is well and the VC is removed. If your sitting in traffic the caravan will not make any difference. regards Dave

best ways of increasing MPG - 300TDI

Nope! Unless you are in traffic day in and day out or just trickling along day in and day out then the VC WILL use more fuel. TBH how long was you stuck in the traffic jam? My 200 tdi with no VC will idle all day without bring in the leccy fan in 40 + here in Spain, the 200/300 tdi...

    leaky 200 steering box...

If the spindle that the drop arm bolts to is not too worn then a repair kit is about £15.00 however, as is the normal way of things you might be better off getting a recon unit for around £100.00 and be done with it. The brake fluid trick can work for awhile if you are lucky, also make sure it...

I was driving along a dry river bed and......

Yep! It took less than 4/5 minutes to go down that far and slowed to an almost stop when it hit the sills, it was still slurping and creaking an hour later. I doubt it would have sunk much further as the back was on solid ground so just lucky I suppose. regards Dave

    problem with brakes

I have not seen a serrated ring that could be purchased separately but I could be wrong, the norm is with the CV some cars the ring can be purchased on it's own. Do not put petrol in the CV housing, instead drain out all the oil and refil with 'one shot' grease, this is a 'one off' operation...

    problem with brakes

This is almost certainly a wheel slip sensor. The self check which occurs after starting and then with the light going out and the fault occuring during movement would indicate this is a fault related to wheel speed difference. The fact that since cleaning the sensor has stopped bring up the...

I was driving along a dry river bed and......

Hi to all in Tarifa, re the double line pull, I have been in all sorts of mud and indeed have driven this route whilst it was under a metre of water and the river bed stayed firm. The most worrying thing was listening to the slurping sounds and watching the car ever so slowly sinking, it...

    Clutch problem?

Good point and while in there get a thrust bearing that is mounted on a metal carrier and not a plastic one, also get the reinforced clutch fork as well, for the extra couple of quid it is well worth it. regards Dave

    Clutch problem?

No they can make a noise for a few seconds normaly pulling away when cold, a few gearchanges later and it will be quiet for untill the next cold start or even be quiet for a few days weeks, either way not an issue. Savvy garages fit a new one when fitting the clutch, what many do not do is...
