Rear Popping noise, only in 1st gear accelerating

A loose brake pad can move in the caliper. As this is related to the fit of the backing plate in the caliper it could happen with new brakes. It's not something that has happened to me personally as I'm still on drums, but I've heard of it.

    Types of defender slam panels

Looking at the 2 types of bonnet i think you could get the earlier bonnet to fit a tdi slam panel but you wouldn't have the safety catch so it could blow open on the road if you hadn't closed it properly. To retrofit the safety catch you would have to cut off one of the four brackets which...

    Types of defender slam panels

My anecdotal evidence supports James Martin - i have a 'B' reg 110 making it pre 19J (it came out of the factory with a NA diesel) and it has the lever in the front grill. My brother has an 'E' reg 90 which still has its original 19J engine and it has cable release. I think the 19J engine came...

    Defender TD5 crossmember identification

Hi Phil, I wonder if you can drill the rivets out of the triangular body panel under the C post (5 minute job) would removing that panel give you enough access to slide the crossmember out? Otherwise it is trapped by the A frame chassis crossmember. Unfortunately I can't take a look at my Landie...

    Defender TD5 crossmember identification

NRC4171... Assuming its the same as my '85 110. I think you have to seperate body and chassis to fit it. I was replacing the rear half chassis so could get it out, otherwise it's a body off job. I've heard rumour you can cut it in half to fit then weld it up in situ but never tried it.

What have I Done Now Help Please

The seal is under the tin mud/dust shield which you will need to prise off. Have to admit that in my admittedly limited experience this mud shield is usually attached to the drive flange, not the axle casing.

    200tdi, hot or not!?

Just to add a bit more confusion, the 19J diesel turbo also has the turbo up high
  8. SteveSw

    200tdi, hot or not!?

Good point! The turbo on my disco conversion is pretty cramped up against the inner wing. I suspect the wastegate actuator doesn't really have enough clearance but i haven't got around to doing anything about it yet

    200tdi, hot or not!?

The engine number begins with 11L on a defender engine. If its a 12L (like mine) or 13L then it's a disco engine. Another sign is modified engine mounts

    200tdi, hot or not!?

I have a disco 200tdi transplant in my 110 and a Steve Parkers temp sender fixed the problem - the one i used was the fine thread one: SPCK224T2

    New diesel 110 help

Exercising my google detective skills suggests it could be a V8 that's been converted to a 4 cylinder Nissan FD35T (hence the 4C)

    Rear A Frame Ball joint

On my 110 belting the collar with a 2lb lump hammer wouldn't shift it. I had to cut the taper off using an angle grinder. On a salisbury axle the A-frame bracket can unbolt so i used a 20 tonne press to get the stub out.

Ex MOD 90 Ignition light doesn't (but alternator still charges)

One way to check your warning light wiring is to turn on your ignition but dont start the engine, and remove the little wire on the back of the alternator and short it to the metal body (or any convenient earth). The ignition warning light should come on.

Ex MOD 90 Ignition light doesn't (but alternator still charges)

Ooh, i have this problem too! '85 110 with a disco 209tdi conversion. The only time the light comes on is when the engine runs on after i switch off the ignition. This latter issue is just a fuel solenoid issue, nothing serious, but it's interesting that this is the only time the ignition light...

    Defender Wheel Sizes

The 'J' indicates passenger rim profile. Landie wheels are 'F' for van rim profile and the number before it is the rim width i.e. 5.5" for a standard landie wheel. I think landies look best on steel wheels (wolf rims FTW) unless you are going for the chelsea tractor look...

    Boost 0.5 bar

My brother's 90 diesel turbo had a split wastegate actuator diaphagm which was p1ssing all the air out. A new actuator is bloody expensive for the 19J so i fitted a similar actuator for a garret t25 which was fraction of the price. The swap involved some angle grinder and hacksaw work but the...

    Carb help Dgas weber 38

Guess that you may have sorted this out by now but if not, it's worth checking for an inlet manifold leak (perhaps broken gasket/heat shield or missing breather hose) or a blocked idle jet. Disclaimer: I've never had a V8 but i once had a volvo with a downdraught weber
