What to go for in a P38

"Farm Car' indeed, and like Bigstoo says "less to go wrong" ....... I'm quite happy with my 1995 2.5DT

    m.p.g dhse hse??

If you want really good acceleration and to be able to power along then surely you can't really expect good mpg. It's horses for courses! My 2.5DT has done 105k, might be a few seconds slower to 60 than a 4.6 (but still gets there) but regularly returns 25 mpg around town and 35+ on a run. I...

    Manual Gearbox won't select Low

Hi Matt, I've tried it with the clutch down and with it up and always get the same message. I've tried moving slowly just in case somethings stuck. Every Land Rover that I have bought to date I have always tried low box ....... except this one, bought it from someone I know. When I mentioned it...

    Manual Gearbox won't select Low

Hi Folks, I asked this question about 12 mths ago but due to back trouble (poor old man) I have not been able to investigate and just wondered if anyone has experienced the same problem since then (not the back). When trying to select Low Box I keep getting 'Select neutral' when I already...

high engine temp when towing caravan

My 2.4 DT always runs hotter when towing my van (although nothing like yours) but I had a similar problem with my old 3.9 classic (lpg). It turned out the rad was partially blocked (internally) and a new one sorted it. Also the engine will run hotter on lpg. lenb

P38 Range Rover Cold Start Problem

Almost anywhere, I got mine from a local "parts" garage ....... they are not specific for RR's. You can buy it by the metre. Lenb

P38 Range Rover Cold Start Problem

Mine did the same a few weeks ago! ......... Changed the leak off pipes (half hour and about £3) and it is now fine. Lenb

EAS - how long to get up to height?

Hi Davy, I would agree with the last post, about 5 secs. Len

EAS - how long to get up to height?

Literally seconds, I've never actually timed mine but after it has settled overnight it will only take 3 or 4 secs to achieve normal height (if that!). Lenb

    Stuck in low

My 95 DT Manual does the reverse of that, it won't go in to low. It has been suggested that it may be the switch on the gearbox/transfer box. Not found it yet to try it out, but mine is not as urgent as yours. Lenb

    P38 99 2.5 DHSE - air hose question......

Hi, I've noticed the smoke in the headlights at night as well, if you really put your foot down I've even had cars back off :) . My RR is a 95DT Manual with 100k, it's also my first deisel and it's quite comforting to see many asking the same questions, in other words 'they all do it' so...

    Auto or Manual

I have owned a manual since April (having owned an auto classic prior to that) and am very impressed. In fact when towing my caravan I much prefer it, it is certainly better in the fuel consumption stakes. Lenb

What mpg are you getting on LPG

I think I read somewhere that the calorific value of LPG was 20% lower than petrol. My 3.9 se (now sold for a 2.5DT) used to do about 12 mpg. I would expect 15 mpg from petrol so the difference is 20%. But at 39p/litre this is definitely cheaper and well worth having the conversion. Lenb

    P38A to coils

I must admit that I have come to the same conclusion about keeping eas. Any idea how long the bags should last? lenb

    P38A to coils

Just a thought before buying full set of bags: Has anyone changed their P38A to coils ...... and if so what's the verdict? Also, anyone think it is a bad idea to change? As I say, just looking at all the possibilities before I start spending money. Lenb

    Can't engage low range (P38a)

Hi Tiga, Thanks for the info, I will let you know how I get on but it may not be today as I've put my back out and am struggling a bit (mind you laying on a hard surface is supposed to help!). Cheers lenb

    Can't engage low range (P38a)

Well I had a good look around this morning, pulling off connectors and putting them back on again (except one in engine bay that I didn't want to risk breaking), assuming of course I was looking at the right components (which I won't know until my Brooklands workshop manual arrives next week)...

    Can't engage low range (P38a)

Hi tiga, Just tried the fuse and sure enough it would not move. It did not come up with select neutral again but did say transfer neutral & high. The RR is Jan 1995, one of the first. It's done nearly 94k and has been well looked after. The only other suspect thing at present are the air...
