oil is on left side as you look from the front of the car. Can't really describe the height but I'll take a picture tonight and post it. I think I'll get the genuine parts, no point in risking buying crap for the sake of 20 quid.

thanks. now you mention it, sometimes when turning hard left, i feel a bit of feedback through the wheel, like it's catching slightly. The front left wheel bearing was replaced recently to pass MOT.
