when was your last service? The first things I'd check are air filter, fuel filter and fuel sedimenter. Also, you might have air in the fuel system since you had the tank off - unscrew the thing on the fuel filter and pump the lever until fuel with no air bubbles comes out.

Had another look at the wiring diagram. The white gets routed through to the purple/brown when the hazard switch is off, so as you say works the indicators when ignition is on. With the hazard switch on, it connects the purple/brown to the battery +ve and disconnects the white wire. So...
