I'd pull the head and make sure the valve stems haven't bent, and that the valves themselves are ok. Good excuse to give the top end an overhaul if it hasn't been done for a while - decoke, new seats, valve stem seals etc. Otherwise I'd agree with ^^^, keep the engine, they're tough old lumps :)

That looks like a nice job. I've always steered clear of painting plastics after having it peel and look very shabby within a year...but I guess things have moved on since the '80s :o

If the belt is tensioned correctly and is turning at engine speed, then I'd also suspect the PAS pump. I mention the belt as my crank pulley came loose a few weeks back and I had intermittent PAS too, so its worth checking that as well.

When I first got my D2, I also had a leak at the PAS pump. There was so much cr@p all over the place that I couldn't pinpoint the source until I'd powerhosed the front of the engine off... In my case the leak was just the jubilee clip holding the lower hose that was loose - worth checking for...

It looks a minter, but its only an ES - if it was a Metropolis then he might make £10 or just over, but I don't think he has a chance at that price :jaw: Thats well into good L322/Disco3 territory and I know most people would opt for one of those instead.

The tyres def make a difference. My D2 Td5 manual was returning a reasonably constant 30mpg on Cooper Discoverer ATRs whereas fitting BFG ATs saw that drop to a 27-28 mpg. Thats a big drop when all other factors are the same. Adding a rooftent knocked it back further to 25ish :(

You can swap the SLABS ECU for a later one with the better logic. Got mine for £60 from a breaker, buts its a PITA to swap over as it hidden behind the glovebox and nestled in amongst the other ECUs

I've yet to have this pleasure, but by the sounds of it its a real PITA - which would explain why so many D1s run around with rear lamps out! :lol:

We tightened the crank bolt on my Td5 engine at the weekend - I put the box into first and stood on the footbrake while my friend heaved on a long breaker bar. I'm sure the same would work to loosen it. Just a thought, but of course you'll need the prop to be attached.
