    this is a nightmare

Glad it all seems to be getting there, have a little tweek with the timing, put some injector cleaner in and give it a good run. Also if you got time before you fill the tank, give the tank sender a quick clean, quick job only took me 20 mins all in, and it was full of muck! Has helped my...

    Freelander advice needed

Have you considered the diesel? A similar aged diesel hippo would be fitted with the 'L series' diesel, renowned for being bulletproof, economic and very reliable- look at the freelander faults poll! They get to 200k+ miles, are very economical (I get over 400 miles to a tank), its performance...

    Mystery small coolant leak

Hi, what engine has the hippo got? There is lots of possibilities, you need to remove the tray and have a good look see. Heater pipework, IRD cooler pipework, core plugs, oil cooler, EGR cooler, just to name a few! The leak could be tracking from elsewhere even the resevoir or thermostat, be...

    Intermittant Electrical Fault

Hi, I had a look around there is only one place I could find that sold genuine ones cheap @ Landrox 4x4 put in quick code 83749 and the switches are £13.90 inc vat! Havent used that site before but it claims the switch is a genuine part. Other than that, they seems to be around the £50 mark...

    this is a nightmare

Hi again, from your symptons (smoke from exhaust hard to start), id still say that it is timing related, especially as it has only ocurred post FIP belt change. There appears to be loads of fuel being introduced to the cylinders, just need to get it injected at the right time! Clutching at...

Head gasket failure again or remnants from last time?

They dont 'break'! They become unserviceable due to being used and enjoyed! All cars have their vices, its not just hippos!:D Apparently the doors do fall off though when wet.... Your plan sounds good, a couple of buckets poured through will do it-flush that mayo away!

Head gasket failure again or remnants from last time?

Hi, I wouldnt worry to much yet, reckon its mayo left over from the last HGF, your speedy actions in stopping the car will have prevented catastrophic overheating so I would replace the hose, replenish the coolant and see how the engine runs just keep an eye on the coolant and oil for the next...

What have you done to your Landie today.

"Re-torqued" (ahem) rocker cover bolts, fitted acoustic cover, fixed HDC switch, put some copper grease on back of brake pads to stop squeeeeeeeeeeling, and adjusted the crap "automatic" adjusters on the rear drums. Good stopping power and a decent handbrake now!

    this is a nightmare

Yeah definetly, these can engines can be really sensitive to timing, had to setup timing twice on a rover sdi (Lseries) before it would run. I would start again, lock the crank and follow the correct fitting procedure for fitting the FIP belt, applying correct torque to tensioner and A/CW torque...

    this is a nightmare

Hi, when you locked the crank and the FIP, was the timing pin/drill bit a sliding fit on the FIP? The timing tool must be able to slide easily in the timing hole, if it doesnt then the timing is out. The correct belt fitment method includes loosening the cam pulley bolts and applying a...

freelander 2l diesel bad to start

Could be the hand primer itself, have heard of the built in NRV failing and draining the fuel back to the tank overnight. My hand primer doesnt collapse in when running. Also consider the pump timing, if you search the forum there has been recent posts, if the pump timing is even 1 degree out it...

    L series poor cold start

Starts much better from cold now and runs smoother too, must be much easier for the FIP to draw fuel through without the crap! Spread the word!

Changed the turbo on wednesday with oil and filter change, flushed the intercooler, did a 350 mile round trip today, 150 of them towing a large trailer, with not a drop of oil burnt!:D I put some millers power additive in, and its really cleared out the injectors too, pulling really well now...

Hi hippolover, Dont worry I will definetly be doing an oil and filter change! Will also prime the turbo by turning over before I start it up! Took off the hose from intercooler to inlet manifold, oil running out. Compressor housing of turbo can rotate 2cm either way. compressor shaft has about 30mm movement side to side. Think Ive just answered my own question, Just need to get hold of a turbo!
