    something went pop

I presume its the ubiquitos head gasket munching K series? Check the oil, is it mixed with owt? Check t'water has it got oil in it? If still unsure, compression or cooling system pressure check should confirm the doom.

    VCU Torque test results

beastsilver: says on your profile that you are replacing a 'freelander transfer box' at the moment. Listen to MHM he knows his stuff. A seized viscous coupling will smash your IRD internals to pieces and very often your rear diff too for good measure. Yes post 2001 models are far more hardy but...

Lengthen the lever to increase the moment. Biggest breaker bar you can find and some weetabix.

Freelander 1999 rattle at low speeds

I had the same and it was the brake shoe to backplate retaining pin had sheared, ballowing the shoe to come away from the backplate and lean outboard to touch the drum. Only semed to make a noise at low speed. Whip the drum off and have a look as speculation is no replacement for inspection!

    new Freelander owner help!!

Black somke: probably split intercooler hose as an easy start.

    freelander diesel engine fault

Hell yes. Usually chafing of the lead is the problem, follow the lead from the injector to the main loom down by the fuel pump. Ensure the lead is still cleanly connected and not damaged in any way. Only rarely the fault is the injector itself. If nothing found then the man pump connectors are...

    freelander diesel engine fault

Ah yes the world renowned freelander 2.5 turbo diesel nutter b*stard. It has a small squirrel called derek that sometimes gets annoyed when his FTSE 100 shares take a tumble so he disconnects or chafes through your #1 injector sensor (haktually quite similar to the 2.0L l-series:rolleyes:), he...

Woo woo noise from rear of Freelander

Other possibilities Brake shoe retaining clips: ive had one of these shear before, allowing the shoe to sit off the backplate and giving me the same symptons. Corrosion from your brake drum lip catching the backplate.

    Got my synergy VP-L today

Just to resurerect this thread for the L series massive, I have changed my injectors this week to proper freelander ones instead of an old set from a 820 that someone had slapped in. Smooth as silk and much quieter (apart from my one annoying tappet), No smoke anymore on any setting but I do...

L series random knock knock tap tap

Thanks for the info so far woolfy, I got a cps on order (tenner off ebay!) Right chaps, the saga continues: After pratting about all day I have found some more info for starters there was 2 different noises. One has been solved by discovering that the 3 camshaft damper plate securing bolts were...

    freelander 1.8 issue screeching tyres

My mate put super cheap crappy £19 'road stars' on his pug once, every corner he took afterwards resulted in 'hollywood wheels', we got stopped by the local coppers twice!

L series random knock knock tap tap

Changed the #1 injector no change, think will try a replacement crank sensor. Cleaned all earths, connectors again no change. Started first time easily with no plugs, so can discount the static timing. If all that fails, clutching at straws, its going to be a hydraulic tappet flush and oil...

L series random knock knock tap tap

All timing belts and tensioners are less than 6 months old, I have rechecked them, there associated pulleys and they are spot on. It starts on the button and sometimes can go 20 mins before the the knocking starts, or it can do it immediatly after startup. Then it disappears as randomly as it...

L series random knock knock tap tap

Eh up, My hippo has been making some strange noises over the last couple of weeks, so I have done a bit of invest but could do with some advice. Randomly there is diesel knock or a loud TAP TAP TAP etc before returning itself to normal. Its got fresh oil in, ive checked #1 injector plug and...

    2WD or not to 2WD

How about pouring rain and sleet on muddy tiny country lanes in oxfordshire at unsociable hours in the morning, especially when the wife (who thinks she's in rally GB all the time) drives! When's the UK ever dry? I've been to belfast a few times, every time it honked it down!:D:p

    2WD or not to 2WD

IMO removing the prop just buggers up the handling of your hippo. I never noticed any saving when the props where removed but noticed how much better the drive was when I refitted them. The confidence and safety in 4wd grip, good handling, off road capability; for me far outweighs the platry...

    rush of air noise

As darmain says, if you can get the pipes off have a good look at them as splits are not always noticeable. Make sure your hose clips are all tight when you refit the hoses. Another possibility and hopefully not, is the intercooler itself, some soapy water is great for finding boost leaks.

    No rear wheel drive

Dont do that! If there is any drive in the coupling, it will drive the rear wheels and fall off the jack! You could put your hippo on axle stands and rotate the wheels by hand, that will give you an overview of whats going on. Turning the prop shafts with a large screwdriver carefully through a...
