anyone got a tow bar for an old defender lying around?

mine has the exact same thing, alot of rotational movenment in the front prop and none in the rear and has the clunk when pulling away, this is down to wear on the input gear and mainshaft not a major problem but will eventually need sorting out

usually bad battery earth mate mines an 85" defender and it occasionally fails to start an no lights on dash, check condition of earth clamp and follow to the block check for corrosion and the usually blueish green build up, clean it up and should be right as rain

how bad is the chassis rot? any pics?

you cant replace them but you can get repair kits and there only buttons to buy and there not to difficult to do, greasing them might pospone damage but they will eventually need replacing

best remove it completely and check that they are all free and that theres no stiffness

dont be so quick to jump that the problem could be gearbox, it may sound as if its coming from there but noise travels. Check both of your props for play in the UJ's, best to completely remove them to check them properly they might feel ok on the vehicle but when taken off you will probably see...

when you say its after re-fueling do you let it run right down into the red? because if so this could be the problem some cars struggle to start if your constantly letting the fuel run right down, plus you dragging all kinds of s**t up from the bottom of the fuel tank aswell

its a locking washer used to stop the locking nut from coming loose, perfectly normal as previously said

yeh pierce the filter with a longish philips screwdriver then use that to turn the filter

yeh i wouldnt attempt that mate the idea of the filter is to stop anything apart fromair getting sucked into your turbo, so best to just keep it
