Beg to differ, the heads are not the same: the BMW heads have 6mm valves and the RR heads have 7mm valves. Ask me how I know.
But, a complete head from a BMW will be a direct fit to a RR engine block, if they have the same intake manifold to start with (alloy vs plastic).
From the pictures I found online I understand what you're getting at. If they are worn away, beyond the maximum opening of the tensioners pistons, the chains will become loose.
But I'm beginning to think that this may not be the problem. If they were getting worn than the problem should present...
Well, to be honest, I didn't come to that conclusion. I read about the special lever tool but I assumed that it was needed only as a way to push the guide arms. But after reading your comment and this BMW Workshop Manuals - 5 Series E34 525tds (M51) TOUR Workshop Manual - 3 RA Replacing Both...
Dear Data,
As much as I like chatting with you fine people over here at LZ, I wouldn't have asked if I could find it in RAVE. As I stated, I searched for and read everything about the timing chains and tensioners...
So, I got this ratle sound on my DSE, that comes up around 2.600rpm. It is doing it stationery or moving. The rattle seems to drop a bit once going over 3.000rpm and if I take my foot down it keeps on rattling until around 2.400rpm, than everything is quite as normal (as quiet as diesels can...
This is madness. I found a technical data sheet from BMW that shows the valve stems as 5.97 or 6.97. So, right now, I'm guessing that the original valve stems for the M51 applied to Range Rovers were 6.97 while the original valve stems applied to the same engine but in BMW cars were 5.97. Does...
Wammers,
Where did you get that info from ? Microcat says that valve stem is 5.97mm, Rimmer Bros (Inlet Valve - Standard Size - Genuine Land Rover at www.rimmerbros.co.uk) states the same and the BMW parts catalogue from Valve Timing Gear ? Cam Shaft BMW 5' E34, 525tds (M51) ? BMW parts...
So, I bought a new bare head from AMC to fit into my 2.5 DSE.
Just got a call from the mechanic that is doing the work saying that the valves from my old head don't fit the new one
Upon further investigation, the old valve stems have a diameter of 7mm while the bore in the new head...
Dear Bix,
Thanks for your help. Unfortunatelly, Google is already part of my friends list, so I took the liberty of asking it first, before harassing you fine folks at LZ.
Seriously now, I know that site but the images are too small to read :(
Hi.
Does anyone have or know where to find the original sales brochure for the P38 Range Rovers ? I'm particullary interested in the standard equipment and options fitted to the DTs versus the DSEs.
Cheers.
A guy here in Portugal did such a conversion, fitting the engine from a bmw 530d to a P38. He never posted many details on the electrowizardry done but i remember seeing lots of pictures about it.
Also there's another fellow in the States that replaced the 4.6 V8 with a 6.2.lt diesel engine...
The question behind this is how to be 100% sure about a second hand head ?
The head in my DSE is cracked (in several places). One shop tested it and said it was fine. Another shop tested it and said it wouldn't hold pressure. Upon better inspection a few cracks were noticed.
Apart from buying a...
Upon further research it seems that Turner Engineering sells these as a replacement head for the P38s. Since TE is a reputable company I'm sure these heads can't be all that bad ?
Hi.
Does anyone have any experience with AMC cylinder heads for the BMW M51 engine that equips the 2.5 diesel P38s ?
I've seen this listed as new on eBay and I've read some less than positive comments on another forum (regarding these heads on another engine), so I'd like to know if anyone...
RAVE states, in a big bold note, that "Cylinder heads may not be refaced".
Does anyone know the veracity of this statement ? Is this just a commercial plot to force us in buying new heads or is there a technical reason behind this ?
