Light doesn’t come on, lever moves freely side to side with no mechanical feel

Driving up a Steep incline the front wheels spin only, try to reverse up the back wheels spin.

Hi, recently got a defender but the centre difflock does nothing, when I push the lever across it moves freely with no feel of anything happening and it definitely doesn’t engage. Wondering if the linkage has dropped off or something but not sure the best way to have a look as don’t really know...
