Yep, including a new earth main between starter and chassis. Most likely I mixed up some wires somewhere. Has to wait until this afternoon, back to work it is... And I mean a paid day job...
Maybe some earth issue at the coil, previousoy, there was some weird transistor ignition, and I tried to reconnect everything the way it was ehen that was removed by my mechanic. But then even that was not original, and now the fuel pump is getting power as specced, maybr I forgot the earth from the coil.

If anyone could have a look to verify, the coil is connected from the negative to the distributor AND thr chassis? If so, that might be my problem.

Not mine but a beautiful 1990 300tdi in for a front wheel bearing. The wheel is literally ready to fall off👌😎👍

I love that color!

Well, I managed to plug the trailer socket. Aparently it s too much to ask for normed cables, e.g. for standardized 13 pin sockets, to adhere to a color scheme. At least the pin usage is common between providers...

Anyway, the horn isn't working. And the intermittent beam lights aren't working anymore. Weird, the latter worked just fine yesterday. I blame a weak battery for now, fingers crossed it is that.

Regarding the hot coil wiring and non starting, I think it might be some crossed wires, most likely IMHO between ignition / starter motor and coil. I did switch the lock contacts from a steering coloumn I had lying around, I was too lazy to crimp the old one. I'll switch them back later. No way to know for sure before the new starter motor is here.

Leaves the window winders and diffs for me. Thr interior has to wait until I know the electrics are working.

My dad and his grand children did the camping interior so. Looks good, and the spare wheel has found a new place. Baby steps! 😎

Sooo, I think I narrowed my electrical worries down a bit, maybe even to the root cause but that's to early to tell for now.

Got a new battery today, and then did some other testing. Everything is working, including the interior lights. Exceptions are: horns, the non-constant beam, coil and wiper/washer. Intermittent failures on oil and ignition warning lights when the ignition is on. I traced all those things to fuse number 3. And that fuse continues on to, I could have guessed, the starter motor.

I did check the ignition lock wiring, it is fine and properly connected. I assume the whole wiring loom is fine was well, besides the mysteriously missing other end of the black-pink wire from the parking break sensor and two black-white ones for a brake system warning light I now assume are for a different VIN. That leaves as the only place where wires can be crossed and circuits broken, the starter motor. And there I seriously found cobled together wires that started with color one, had something else for a bunch of cm and went on to a different color. And I do have a broken contact there as well.

Until the new starter motor shows up, I'll some mechanical things: window winders, the passenger door lock, the right front inner wing to chassis mount, poperly installing the front lights and grill. And maybe I manage to chase down that parking brake sensor cable. If not, well, I have to pull some wires for the transmission temp sensor. I can as well put in one for the parking braking sensor while I'm at it.

And the second electrical circuit from the secind battery: two 12V plugs where the radio normally goes, two where the center coin tray is and two into the trunk.

October is approaching fast so, I need to speed things up a bit!

Lunch break, so I had another look at the internets regaeding wiring, especially to get an idea on how to wire the 123ignition distributor. That one has two wires, red and black. Weird, I thought as I only saw a black one and mine has one of those distributors installed, right? So I took the cap of, and guess what, the distributor looks an aweful lot like a standard one!

Well, the two times I had contact with 123ignition, they struck me as a quite arrogant bunch. And they are expensive! I still like the idea of an electronic distributor so. Anyone has any experience with Powerspark? They are affordable, are a straight swap and totally sufficient for a non racing spec engine.

Edit: Just checked the wiring of the starter relay between two meetings (remote work is great!): that is wired correctly. Took some time, the print quality of the workshop manual is not great, but I did properly install WR to W2, black to W1, NR to C1 and brown to C2! It seems I messed up the wiring at the starter motor, connecting the coil wire to the contact between starter relay and starter motor. No time to investigate further until later today.
