Hey all! Another Thread :p

I am looking to change the oil sump on the Freelander but last I looked the IRD and other brackets are in the way, if anyone has done it I would love some suggestions, I really don't want to have to take the IRD out again, I swear it's come out enough times!

Anyhow, when I looked it seems like it might be possible to get to all the bolts on the sump but I really don't want to snap or strip them so the best angles would be ideal. Just looking for tips.

Thank you!

Is this for a K series? If it is then I don't think you need remove the IRD support bracket.

Yes it is a K series, I can see the support bracket in your image has been removed or wasnt there (goes around the drive shaft) but I can clearly see the IRD is still in which is good news!

Thanks

I did this a few years ago but don't recall moving anything other than the exhaust.
At the time I was replacing the head gasket and ran into problems trying to remove the head bolts due to oil crystallising in the bolt holes. I had to pull the sump and oil rail to get the bolts out.

Got the old sump off, the only part I needed to remove other than the exhaust was the bracket that goes around the driveshaft and connects to the bottom of the sump to the IRD as it was in the way of one of the sump 10mm bolts, I am sure with a UJ socket bit you could get in there but the last thing I wanted was to round the bolt or snap it :)

Got some pictures of the Brand new Second hand sump, before and after I cleaned it up;

Good news is that the new sump did not have any metal in it and even looked pretty good. For 300 miles...

None-the-less all went back together smoothly and without a hitch, made sure to clean the mating surface and put on new gasket sealer / RTV.
