Clearly i need my head examined, but looking forward to chillier days i've taken the plunge and bought a Webasto top 20 electric preheater. I don't really need it apart from at home so the electric route seemed sensible.

Waiting for the package to arrive from Berger camping, but plan so far (to be updated with many, many exciting pictures....)

1. Tap the coolant system just behind the filling chimney before it goes into the heater matrix.(hose into Websato then hose out joined with a couple of 90degree brass fittings)
2. Identify the heater blower relay in the engine bay and piggy back the output pin
3. Take the trigger feed from Webasto to a new relay giving a 12v source to the output pin on the blower motor
4. Tea & medals etc

The thinking on the relay pin piggyback is this avoids having to mess around with ignition feeds etc as it effectively does away with it.

Just waiting on Yodel...
 
Remote control ??
It's an electric one so plugged into a socket on the outside of the garage (or even inside if i feel all fancy) and then just a Hive remote control plug (or just a time plug) to switch it on. It triggers the blower fans when the coolant is hot to defrost cabin as well.

i am particularly looking forward to identifying which random collection of wiring i have...car is a 1988, but i've detected many earlier bits on my previous forays. I think changeover year gives a particular sense of excitement to these exercises!

Had electric preheater in Canada, really great to get into a slightly warm car when it was minus 40C outside.
 
Look forward to updates, I considered this a few years ago but to be honest given the lack of really cold winters in the UK these days (in our part of East Anglia it rarely drops much below freezing point) I no longer see the point. Anyway it's only of benefit when your car is at home .. should it freeze when you are parked elsewhere during the day/night you're back to square one.

At home some warm water onto the 'screen with wipers on intermittent (I don't have a heated 'screen) & I'm ready to drive away within a couple of minutes. True the interior is still parky but the heating takes the chill off within a couple of miles.
