2003 Freelander 1 TD 4 . After an engine change a year ago my car is sometimes difficult to start when it's been parked pointing up hill . I really don't know if the up hill parking is part of the problem but if parked flat or pointing down hill this doesn't happen . Because of this I have just changed the Fuel pump and filter located under the right rear wheel arch . Could air in the fuel system cause this or even the inline filter under the bonnet . When the car does start it runs great . Help please because we have owned this car for nine years and we love it . Thanks

You may get a better response in the Freelander section.

How steep is the hill your parked on?
Half tank, quater tank or full tank of fuel?
Any diesel smells from under the bonnet? 🤔

Full tank and not much of a slope at all . I did have a leaking fuel pipe from the inline filter that runs near the battery box but I simply replaced the pipe but I had this problem before that . Could the plastic inline fuel filter give any problems , I will buy a new one in the next day or two . Thank you for responding .

Yes the filters do get clogged up. A tired pump usually impacts drivability as well as starting. But you said you replaced it, so it should be ok.

When parked uphill, turn the ignition on without starting until the glow plug light goes out. Then do it again, and after that try starting. The system is self priming so unlikely to be air in it (once it's filled)

Also check the fuel hoses on the high pressure pump, plus the pump itself for any signs of leaks. They are hard to see under the inlet manifold, so use a mirror & torch.

And make sure your oil level isn't rising, the HP pump can leak into the sump.

Dunno if the TD4 has a non-return valve in the fuel pipe work. The L Series has in the priming bulb (which the TD4 doesn't have).

Your very welcome,.
Hmmm, do you mean the actual fuel filter or a additional one?
The fuel filter alongside the fuel pump under the rear wheel arch is new just two days ago . I was wondering if the clear plastic inline filter near the battery could give problems . I think it's a good idea to use a torch and a mirror to check out the pipework in front of the engine but it seems quite dry all round there . Thanks again for the suggestions .

Check your camshaft position sensor - if this is faulty it will cause starting issues.
(It won’t necessarily give an engine fault code.)
