Hi,
Yes im old, no i know naff all and not shy to admit it :)
So here we go.

After many years ive picked up a Defender at last, im not experienced in mechanics so tech jargon will go straight over my now not full head of hair :D
Problem i could do with some help on is the fitted PTO (hydraulic capstan winch came with the Landy).
The pto engages, but it wont disengage when i pust the lever/button or knob if you prefer lol in and i have a constand red warning light to not reverse whilst its engaged. I took the center storage out to have a look and everything seems connected and moves ok.
If i take 1 or 2 of the wires off as seen on top the warning light goes off but ofc i still hear the pto running

any help would be appreciated on how i can fix it so it disengages
thanks

I don't have a PTO on my 90 so won't be a huge help here, however, that 'thingy' with the wires on looks like a pressure switch which when trhe PTO pump is running will light up the 'do not reverse' warning lamp on the dash.

The PTO is driven by the engine spinning the gearbox which spins the transfer box (LT230) which has the propshafts and the PTO connected to it.

I presume you have your 'high/low' gearstick in neutral which disconnects the drive to the propshafts (so you don't move).
In this config there is still drive to the PTO and possibly this is why it won't disengage.
Have you tried putting the main gearbox (R380) into neutral and pressing the clutch and then disengaging the PTO ?

thanks for replying.
ive tried it every way possible, hi/lo in neutral and in gear out of gear, hi/low engaged and in the gears (then the pto runs plus i get drive power), all ways using the clutch does engage and disengage the pto but the warning light never goes out and even with the pto button pushed in (off) there is still a noticable light rattle from the pto.
im totally out of my depth lol

I would agree that maybe cos it still has drive its not able to fully release try as ^^^

In your pic number 2 it looks like the switch is a simple prox switch or there is a little push tit in the end we cant see.
Pic 2 seems to show it engaged
Pic 3 shows it disengaged but maybe not far enough, so try as above if that dont work you may have to check and lube the linkage, You can see some of it in the pics.

If the light doesnt go out it could just be a duff/dirty switch.

Put your finger over the end see if you can feel a little "tit" or if its smooth flat.

So the warning light is just a warning light .... can you engage the PTO and spin the capstan/winch (so you know it's working) and then disegage the PTO and see if the capstan/winch still works ?

If it stops working when the disengage lever is pressed then the pressure switch is faulty/stuck on ....
As Mr @marjon says, it might need some lubrication to free it up..
