I've had an epic oil leak for a while now and think I've finally tracked it down. I've just done a load of work on the Disco and noticed that oil was pooling on the lip of the block under the oil cooler with the engine running. I cleaned it up and started the engine again and sure enough there was a dribble of oil running down the block from under the cooler. At least I think it's oil. It's very thin but completely black. Tried to get a picture to see where it's coming from but that's the best I can do. I'm assuming this will be a complete strip down of that side of the engine to remove the cooler? Anyone have experience of this?

Thanks Sierrafery. I see no evidence of oil in my coolant but I've bought a complete oil cooler repair kit. Might as well do it for all the work involved so hopefully I'll not be doing it again.

While you're at it you'll want the gaskets and O-rings for the two filter housings if they're not included in the oil cooler repair kit.

I have a box full of TD5 gaskets and seals tucked away somewhere. I need to find it and see what I have. Luckily, I'm not in a rush to complete this job so if I don't have what I need I can order at my leisure.

UPDATE:

I've now got back on this job after coming off shift and a small holiday.
Got everything built back up and started the engine to check for leaks and it was worse than before I started. Coming from a different place though so I stripped everything down again and found that the leak was now from the oil filter housing gasket. I've had it to bits and back together half a dozen times trying to cure this leak and I'm getting nowhere. There is an absolute river of oil getting past the gasket. I've tried old and new gaskets, even stripped the filter housing from my spare engine and tried that. I'm completely stumped, not to mention extremely frustrated. Has anyone else experienced this?

I took everything apart again yesterday and inspected for cracks. As far as I can see there aren't any. I assembled the filter housing back onto the cooler out of the car to make sure I'd done it right and could see that the gasket was fitted properly then fitted the assembly back onto the engine. Still leaking. At least I managed to ascertain exactly where it was leaking by lying under the car while the engine was running. It's definitely coming from the lower edge of the filter housing.
