Hi all,
I recently bought a Defender 300tdi, and I'm getting some white smoke from under the driver seat and from the R/H undercarriage near the fuel tank. It doesn't happen all the time, but after the car's been resting for a week or so, and when I push the engine (it's not overheating). The smoke smells of fumes/exhaust.
Thanks in advance, guys. Worried I bought a dud...!

The drivers seat lifts up at the front (grab it a pull) and comes out. Under there is a hatch. Under there is the fuel tank and you can see towards the center of the car onto the top of the LT230 (transfer box), and the levers coming off the gear stick that controls 4WD and Diff Lock as well as part of the side of the gearbox.

The exhaust is the other side of the car (nearside). It runs along the gearbox and transfer box to the back of the car.
The drivers or offside of the engine has the air box, fuel filter, fuel injector Pump (FiP) and injectors. It also has the steering shaft and steering box.

The near or passenger side also has a removable seat base and a hatch but under there is the battery compartment so you can't see any of the engine or exhaust.

Possibly you have a fuel leak somewhere, the run off pipes are prone to this as they degrade.
The best ting to do is get some degreasant, give the engine, gearboxes and around the fuel tank a good clean and then see if you can detect any leaks.

Thank you - that's great advice. I'll take a look under the seat and investigate. Cheers.
