Hi All

Getting mixed messages on securing my new 90 2.4tdci 61 plate.

Do I need a steering wheel lock like a diac lock or one of those 1980s extendable arms etc?

I assumed the alarm and immobiliser are sufficient - notwithstanding someone deciding to just tow it away!

Any thoughts appreciated

Disc lock. The arm type ones like krooklock are next to useless. Pedal lock as well. They'll still try to nick your doors though but you can fit security type bolts to help there.

Do you need a steering wheel lock .... unfortunately my crystal ball is away being cleaned at the moment so I can't tell you.
The best person to ask is yourself.

Do you 'need' one or 'want' one ?
Why do you feel you 'need' one ?

You could if you think your car is at risk do the following....

Buy a cheap early 1990's number plate and register it to your car.
Remove any badges or signs that show it is a Puma and get some 200tdi stickers put on it.
Paint the body work with lime green and purple emulsion, badly.
Disguise the posh seats with cheap cammo style seat covers.
Fit a key switched relay to the Fuel pressure control solenoid / IMV / Inlet metering solenoid valve and remember to turn it 'off' when parking the car.
Always turn your steering to full lock before taking out the key.

I am new to this defender life - and thought it was the earlier ones that tended to get stolen.

Other than reasonable paint - it has no bells and whistles - basic seats, no ac, no electric windows, no... well... anything at all!

I didn't think I needed any extra security till almost everyone I know (who have never had a defender) haslve said I do - hence the question.

Suppose a disc lock is cheaper than a bad paint job, seat covers, wiring, and new (old) decals!

Cheers

Its a landy it will break soon & then you'll be begging someone to take it. 🤣 🤣

The keys have been in mine for 2 years & its still outside.

Not sure it can be much worse than the 71 plate RR phev autobiography that I have changed from - that seemed to identify as a paperweight much of the time 🤣🤣🤣

Can get removable steering wheels. Also can get sim card trackers...hide the unit very hard to get to then you can track it with your phone. :)

I guess it depends where you live (you haven't said).
I'm up in Scotland and haven't locked the doors in years and rarely take the keys out.
I tend to take the keys when I goto a shopping center or the cinema etc but don't bother to lock it.
I do have a hidden key switch on the fuel solenoid though...

DVLA transfer fee £80

£18 + £11 + £15 + £5.01
= £129.01

Disklock Gold = £179.00

Ok so forget the paint ... £100.01 ...

Security is like a multi layered approach.... is a decent steering wheel lock better than nothing? Absolutely, but combine that with a few other things and you'll make thieves go after someone else's car instead.

Also where you live is important too, I've probably gone a bit over the top with security considering I'm up in Scotland and Defenders seem to be less targeted here, but I've still got a steering wheel lock (not the best, but not the worst), pedal lock, gearstick lock and its usually blocked in by another car (or 2 at night).

They all get stolen from a price of crap farmers truck to a blinged up Khan special. Puma bonnets and door as all the other ones have rusted out by now..
