In (what I thought was a genius move) bought it as it's ULEZ exempt! (unlike my old mazda bongo!) well. done. me! But, just realising that the money I'm probably/ excitedly going to spend on it is going to out weigh that! not. so. well. done. me!! 🀣

Purists don't hate me, a 1972, same age as me, with a 2.5l diahatsu (think the jury is out on them), fairey drive and p38 power steering. Twin tanks, 2 x 12v batteries. Was a company mascot for 15 years, so seems to have been quite loved - chassis isn't patched, body ok ( v slight surface rust on body wheel arch surrounds (whats a good fix for that?). Converted from left hand drive.

Had all the pick axe and shovels on - but have taken them off so they don't encourage random vandalism (by me when if it breaks down).

Its got that vice and winch added - apparently by the dutch army, and that air filter/ mini pizza oven too, and those wheels and tyres.

Lots of things to look at/ fix that Flossie and ER1C have already been helping me with - as I'm no mechanic - so already working as my new hobby/midlife crissis, and the kids have already asked about staging an 'intervention' and their inheritance :)

Hope you like it. (hides behind sofa)

Wow, not what I was expecting!

The genius thing would be to sell one of their kidneys. You’ll get a better price they can see it as a down payment on the inheritance. They only need one each afterall πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Thank you everyone for your kind words! Means a lot 😍 I'm currently going through the 'wtaf have i done / i utterly love it' stage! 🀣

That air filters weird isn't it! Pizza over/ coffee machine! It seems dry and ok - I'm replacing the filter - it needs a decent service all round. On that, any ideas on the hosing I need (see attached pic) The lower hose has a split developing. (sorry, this is such a basic question I know!)

I'm still getting to know it, seems to have a few issues currently - occaisonal dying when decelerating - previous owner saying it might be the change over valve leaking air?... If the engine still plays up then remove the front seat and beside the tank is the twin tank changeover valve, remove the top pipe and connect it directly to the tank next to it after removing the pipe running into that. If that cures it then the the changeover valve is allowing air into the fuel system. Do that and run around on one tank for the moment. Going to get that looked at.

Slight grinding on full lock from the power steering. No idea if that's bearings, steering rack, pump, other things - thats above my pay grade so will need to get that looked at... though judging from the pics there's a definite difference between each side!

I really like this forum btw!

Hi and welcome! 2 batteries, is it still 24v?
Not really sure yet... I think it's been converted to 12 - the batteries don't seem to be connected, and it has a winch. Another question I didn't ask when I was going gooey eyed looking at, rather than thinking with my head! (that approach might also explain why I'm a single dad! 🀣)

As you have a non standard engine and made up hoses, by the looks of it. Take the hose off and go to your frendly motor factor, go through his hoses and find 1 that is the right size and has the right bend. then cut off the bit you need. You may find 1 hose that would do both your bends just by cutting it in half :).

Dont right yourself off so easy.
They dont have a rack the have a steering box.
As for the look of your swivels "yep they all look like that sir";), its the swivel ball seals. The grinding could be a UJ (which is inside the "ball".
Jack up the front wheels and wiggle the steering look for slack in all the joints that move.
Give each wheel a turn and wiggle.

Get a manual:).

Thank you Marjon! 😍 It's had power steering add, which is good, but yeah on full lock its not a happy bunny. Good shout on the hoses!

Manuals here that will help apart from engine and other mods different on the lightweight

I would try not to farm out too much work as you will miss out on the learning and understanding of how bits work best spend the money on new tools required
The s3 workshop manual has the servicing detailed at front and what tools reqd towards the end
Enjoy!
thats amazing! thank you! Yeah, hoping to do as much as I can, and I've been blown away by kind and helpful everyone is on here, so I'm sure I'll be asking many a question : )
