So the male part of the shaft sticking upwards can have 2 types of grooves
One is a groove that is basically a slot that would allow the bolt through with no play

The other is the male shaft has a groove the whole way around meaning that the tightness of the bolt and nut is much higher then on option 1 as it needs to close the splines on the male and female together

Option 1 is I think known as a Disco box and option 2 is the defender box

I seem to remember that the bolt is actually an aluminium bolt and nut so the amount of Nm you can tighten it before stripping is less than the amount of NM applied to a baby's nappy to keep it in place

But that might not be your question despite the 84 words used to explain it to the world as an audience

More like the play is in the “box” that the steering shaft goes into near the front of the vehicle.

If the column is tight on the steering box and the steering wheel can be turned without the drop arm moving then the play is in the box (obviously).
There is a correct way to adjust the steering box.
You could have changed just the ujs and not the whole column if it was OK.
 
Can this be done with wheels on the ground or do they need lifting?
It's in the work shop manual, you can damage the steering box if not done correctly I do believe.
Never had to do it so not 100% sure.
Or you could just nip it up and hope for the best.
 
Fitting new radiator along with new hoses. My thinking was the blue ones give me a clue in future which ones have already been done 😂

However, a couple of the hoses don’t match.

The set I’ve bought are definitely Defender hoses (according to the part #), and I’m now suspecting I have some Disco parts in here.

Any expert eyes much appreciated 🤔

Are you sure you don't have a Disco 200tdi?

Now need to work out why it won’t start after I’ve changed the radiator per the workshop manual.

Turns over but won’t start. Air in fuel? Some wire come loose somewhere? 😣😣

Check the wire on the fuel cut off solenoid on the injection pump.
